I have found a detailed report for my local water. Sorry for the very amateur question. Could you tell me how to calculate it from this table? I will be getting a softener filter this week so I presume the values will change, but if I learn to calculate it myself then I can do it anytime. I will get a 1.9lt Zero jug for my 2lt Elizabeth tank.

erkal Your average is 265mg/L as HCO3, so to get down to 40-50mg/Las CaCO3 multiply 265 by 0.8 = 212mg/L. Then 212/5 parts total = 42mg/L

So subtract 1 part from the 5 parts total, for your tap water, you are now left with 4 parts Zerowater.

So for every 100ml of tap water, mix in 400ml of Zerowater.

MWJB I have ordered a jug and a test kit, I will follow this formula and see how it tastes. Either way it will be better than having to lug water bottles from Tescos every week. Thank you so much for the information!

So using your formula along with Zero jug really did make a clear difference in my espresso, again thank you for that.

I am now wondering if there is a way to adjust the water gradually as the Zero filtered waters TDS starts rising with use? Is this possible or shall I just bin it as soon as it reaches TDS 0.06 as suggested by Zero? I feel like even at 006 water is still pretty soft.

I’m adding bicarbonate of sodium so that the ppm reader included with the jug shows between 45 and 60ppm. I prefer this method as I don’t know what else is in the tap water and assuming the zero water filters other particles too.

My Elizabeth only saw this method (but I don’t measure the TDS afterwards usually - times I measured it reads around 45ppm). My Elizabeth is still going strong and that’s going to be almost 5 years… Never descaled (there’s no reason to do it), and the steam boiler is on every day in the morning. I don’t leave the machine on when I don’t need to, and everything is original (apart from the group gasket) :-)

Well, you can know easily, because your supplier is obliged to test the water & tell you, whether good/bad.

erkal It took months for the Zerowater to rise above 006ppm TDS. I’d just bin it personally.

Isn’t there a regulation that jug filters should be changed every 2 months?

Also, you don’t know what that 006 is composed of (alkalinity, hardness, bacteria, etc.)

MWJB TBH Mine came faulty and it was already at 004 at the first test as it was leaking a bit from where filter screws into the top part of the jug. They did eventually send replacement but I thought I’ll keep using it until its dead.

It has been 17 days today and it’s already at 02 something because I never checked as I didn’t think TDS would rise this quickly. I guess time to bin it anyway. ..

erkal Double check the tightness of the filter in the screw thread in the reservoir. If there is any leak here, you will get a false reading.

I don’t know why you would bin the filter at 002TDS.

Pour the water to be filtered into the flat part of the reservoir, not directly into the filter.

MWJB Yeah we went through it with support, it’s never tight enough so leaks ever so slightly. TDS now is 022 not 002.

PS. Just triple checked. The TDS meter which came with the jug shows 026 and my other TDS meter shows 820 lol
