I have a wooden handled bottomless pf (generic) that I bought for my Elizabeth then a barista pro IMS basket in it. Will this IMS basket fit the supplied bottomless pf that comes with the Vesuvius?

So, my Vesuvius arrived today. I didn’t want to start another thread and this looked like the most appropriate place to discuss my first day! It left Italy last Friday and arrived in my house today - 6 days, yipee! Mine was definitely used, the plastic was gone from it, there was dirt here and there, spilled water underneath the water tank and for some reason the pipes going onto the tank had a black residue of some sort on parts of them. The panel on top of the machine, where the cup test sits is pretty badly finished with dirty plastic covering it but doesn’t bother me. I didn’t pay for a brand new machine I guess!! Assembling was easy as the provided guide is comprehensive (remember the first thing you do is unscrew the four screws on the top of the side panels, no hammer or anything required) The Teflon furniture gliders I pre purchased are perfect for moving it around on the counter top. A bag of felt pads come with the machine. I put 1L through the group 200ml at a time with at least 15 seconds in between. I then emptied the service boiler twice as per manual. I noticed the shower screen had coffee on it so I soaked that in puly caff and gave a good wash. At this stage I only had time to pull 4 shots as I had to leave! I was close to dialled in by the fourth albeit a bit long but I took it with me in the car- I have to say it was very very nice. So I look forward to playing with it tomorrow. I thought I had a dodgy touch screen as it didn’t seem to respond some times but apparently there are different delay times for different choices on it.. phew..! Looks a stunning machine on the counter and I love the almost totally silent pump. I thought the water reservoir wasn’t the best design but I think I’ll get used to it and won’t have to be refilling it so often when I’m not flushing the system through and just using it to make coffee! It really is a different operation to the Elizabeth but I don’t think it will take long to get used to it. So, I can’t wait to drink coffee from it tomorrow

DavecUK well, a couple of months ago, probably on this thread, there were a couple of people experiencing the machine shooting up high randomly. I was one, you advised to reduce the pump speed, which I did, can’t remember exactly what speed but that worked, and hadn’t changed until now. Nothing else has changed

It’s hard to know what, the mechanical parts of the pump are made by FOT, the brushless motor side by Cruzet and it all runs on impulses from the main board. Software hasn’t been upgraded on your machines, you are using the same pumps so it’s not going to be a hardware/firmware issue.

However it might be pointing to another problem that slowing the pump acc down, masks!

e.g. restriction in the brew circuit such as a bit of crud in the gicleur (group jet), or something that intermittently blocks it…perhaps some limescale build up, something in the pump line, or water valve system??

DavecUK I’ve only used the re mineralised osmio and a couple of times just pure osmio without remineralisation for a couple of weeks so I’d be more than surprised if there was any scale or other in there. That would be the logical explanation I guess as you say the system hasn’t changed. Difficult to know why would it ‘shift’ requiring a lower speed to achieve the same pressure with all else constant

DavecUK yes, I agree. This morning I made a coffee and it again shot up to about 11.8 bar. This is after it worked fine yesterday afternoon with pump speed of 110, didn’t change anything since then.

Open up the top of the group, remove mushroom, split and, inspect the area for debris, check the gicleur is clean

DavecUK opened it up,apologies didn’t get many pics as two young ones putting pressure on me! But, there was some sort of deposit all around it. I disassembled as much as I could and left in citric acid solution for twenty minutes then gave a good rinse with water to all areas. Looks like scale to me, hopefully you can make something from the pics

Heating up now I’ll make a couple coffees

What water do you use? If memory doesn’t fail me, you have an Osmio Zero, correct? Are the pictures before or after the citric acid bath?

MediumRoastSteam yes correct only ever osmio zero remineralised. I’ve had the machine since March last year. I even removed the remineralisation cartridge and just fed pure osmio ro for two weeks on two occasions. Pics are straight after removal from the machine, before placing in citric acid solution

Personally - I don’t think you have much to worry about. Let me grab a picture (link) of the mushroom of my Pro-700 18 months on from back in the day.

Of course the steam/service boiler is a different issue as the temperatures in there are higher and will scale up faster.

I don’t have an Osmio so I don’t know if what you see is actually limescale or not, but Dave has been using one for many years now and he never descale his machines as far as I know.

MediumRoastSteam yep I don’t think it was too bad either. I made a coffee just now with same settings as this morning and it only shot up to about 9.6 bar, but that’s how it performed yesterday on the same settings too, before shooting up to nearly 12 bar this am

JahLaza It might also be the brew circuit letting by and the initial run of the pump is making up that lost volume so runs real quick to try and bring the pressure up, then of course overshoots as the PID control can only do so much. You could try running some water through the group before the shot, see if that makes a difference, just 20ml.

DavecUK I actually did that this evening and this morning thinking along those lines myself but alas the shots pulled as described. I’ll see how it goes tomorrow. I’m not too worried if it only slightly overshoots but up to the highs it has been is too much, and I would also just wonder why I’m now down at 100 from like 400, then 300 or so from a couple months ago.

JahLaza it most likely is a red herring but is it possible to have too fine ground coffee when this happens? Is the overpressure read on the display or is it on the manometer on the group head?

John_Yossarian hi John, thanks for the suggestion,I don’t believe it’s that though, the shots are 16 in/30 out in about 30secs and the profile I’ve stuck with the past few days is 8sec at 2 bar followed by straight 9 bar. The one shot this morning I had was preceded by a water flush (about 4 secs) and machine was on for about 50mins, it still shot up to 11.9 bar after the preinfusion@2 bar, pump speed at 100 as per yesterday. I’ll get back to Paolo see what he says

JahLaza My question was driven by my observation that whenever I change beans and get them finely ground the difference between the display pressure and the pressure showed by the manometer on the E61 head increases. The finer the ground the larger the difference. I hope this is just a temporary glitch that Paolo could work out. Not obvious though. Good luck!
