In all the years I have fiddled with coffee, I have never had a nice set of scales. I could not bring myself to spend £100 plus, so never have! Instead I buy Ebay cheapies, but the trouble is for one reason or another, they do not last. The last pair I bought, one lasted 3 days and the others have become wet so often then they cannot have long left. Can anyone recommend a value waterproof set please?

I use Jo Frex scales. Seem to work well

Not sure how waterproof they are but I’ve had plenty of coffee drips on them and it’s never been an issue. Clearance under a PF can be a bit tight but never something I couldn’t work around. Ive be lucky to have never drenched my scales. I use the yuanga ones from black cat at £20. Is this for espresso or pour over, are you dictated by size

@"Mark-drinks-coffee"#p14082 I have flooded, ie poured 50-200ml of coffee over, mine a LOT of times. Unscrew, tip on side to drain and leave open for a few hours to a day and they are ok. In a bag with rice if really bad. They are10 years old and still going strong.

BigTTony I like the Timemore ones, but they are a bit expensive for me and I also wonder if they weigh from the top or via the feet?

I have the Timemore Black Mirror scales. I don’t know the technicalities, but they work with no problem on the Mara X drip tray, which I think is the same as the Bianca. They where ~£30 from AliExpress, and are on the biggish side. The smaller model (Nano?) is double the price.

Doram thanks Doram. The Timemore are nice, but probably a little too expensive for me. The reason I included them is because I like the overall design. If none of the others did what I required of them, I’d likely go with the Timemore, so in that respect, it’s good to know that they can do the job. Can you do me a sma favour though - if you hold it in the palm of your hand without touching the feet, you’ll know whether it weighs from the top by pressing down with your finger (without touching the feet). If you get hardly anything registering, the weight sensors are obviously in the feet, but if you get instant weight readings, the sensors are on the top.

It would be great if you wouldn’t mind checking that for me as its a big deal breaker for me.

Doram I also have the Timemore Black Mirror that I bought a year ago from Aliexpress and they’re great. I use them on my Pavoni so if they fit on that they should fit on every machine.

Cuprajake I also have these and have spilled coffee and hot water on it a few times and they seem to be fine after drying off with the battery taken out. Some liquid has even leaked into the LCD but hasn’t affected the display or performance yet!

The Timemore Black Mirror doesn’t have ‘feet’. It does have four soft rubber stickers on the corners of the bottom part, but those have no function in the weighing. You can hopefully see it in the video - the middle part is resting on the Niche inverted cup, the four corners are up in the air and the scale is weighing the beans. I guess the sensors sense the compression of the bottom ant top part of the scale, so they work as long as a part of the scale is supported, but it doesn’t need support across the entire surface, or the corners. You can put a cup in the centre or the corner of the scale, and part of the scale can be in the air, but it still works:

i use black mirrors on my bianca, they’re huge. i have them over hanging the edge so they dont get hit by the exhaust at the end of a shot purely as its more cleaning up. they read fine, the sensor is in the top.

spasypaddy For the black mirror, you say they’re huge but would it seat 2 cups for splitting a shot? I have rounded glass cups that I currently put on top of a takeaway container lid on the scale as my £10 scales aren’t quite wide enough. Most of these scales don’t look particularly wide and mine work most of the time fine but when they do stop I wouldn’t mind getting something like the black mirror.

spasypaddy I’ve decided against them tbh. I couldn’t find one that would do shipping to the UK around the £30 mark and the VAT also comes in on top of that so all in all it was looking to be much higher than my budget.

I think my next one to look at is the ecoaster for. £30 from Amazon

Aren’t scales mostly waterproof anyway? I use these got them at a carboot for £2 they work alright, no timer though so I have to use my phone. I previously used these I bought from aliexpress for £10, accuracy was bad though.

I have an el cheapo set of scales from eBay. I paid £3.99 of thereabouts. It’s about 11 years old.

@dfk41 - how do you get them wet? I can’t see how it can be damaged by a drop of coffee now and again, unless you deliberately spill water/coffee on them.

I use generic Chinese jewellery scales (easy to find on eBay and Amazon) and use the provided trays to ‘waterproof’ it.
