Cuprajake I’m definitely a subscriber to the “pay once, cry once” method.
The 12 months 0% APR offer is at shopcoffee.co.uk, financed via Klarna - but their prices seem to be 10% higher than everywhere else 😁 They have some really nice Ceado grinders… for £4500, which seems frankly taking the piss.
Newdent Again - thanks for the tips; the serial number on the Kony I’m looking at starts with 16, so it’s about 5-6 years old rather than 2 as per the seller’s reply to my question…
The “liking” for conicals comes from reading that they are particularly well suited to medium/dark roasts, which is what we like as a family. Whether that’s true… remains to be seen; I haven’t seen/read anything that is particularly convincing one way or the other, however both the Niche and the Kony seem to have a very good set of burrs! The appeal of the Kony is/was - to a large extent - the fact that the Niche has the same burrs, and everyone raves about the coffee ground by them.
The Mini (IMHO) seems to be an “old design school” product: Mazzer designed a “home grinder” by scaling down a successful commercial design, without considering the actual use case needs; much cheaper/faster to do, but not necessarily as effective. It ends up - as far as I can tell, and these are all ‘paper’ considerations - with an underpowered motor, a not-great set of burrs (at least the 58 mm versions), less precision in fabrication and relatively high retention as the chamber is shaped and finished as on the larger machines. Plus, for effectively the same price once used, one can get a Super Jolly or a Major which seem to be better grinders. The only significant advantage the Mini has is the small footprint (which for me is not at all relevant). All this said, I really don’t know what I’m talking about - I’m just looking at this with the eye of somebody trained in designing and engineering products, but with zero expertise in coffee equipment!
