MWJB it would still be useful to have some roast level indicator in the product description. But maybe that rankles with the idea of specifically not designating coffee as a filter vs espresso?
I have had this conversation a few times with a few roasters. Generally, we do find the roaster specifying the roast level as a part of description. We have some exceptions, though!
First, some would not like to get in to the idea of specifying the roast at all; I remember one popular roaster would not even verbally discuss it, even after picking a couple of bags before ordering. I remember the roaster advising me they can’t as consumers take on them might vary. May be. I think the roasters’ description of the roast is paramount. It helps.
Second, I some times find the roast is darker than the description. This is still the case in the case of a few roasters. I remember one roaster specified the a few bags as very light. On delivery, it was not even medium by any standard. It was medium dark. This happened in the case of two light roasts I had ordered. Something had gone wrong. I contacted them. They neither answered the call nor replied even after sending a few reminders. The coffee was good; but it defeated the purpose of specifically ordering a light roast. I never ordered anything from them after that.
In general, the roasters will respond kindly and aim to make it good. I also do not like to take advantage of the kindness - replace or refund. It can hurt them.
Third, I remember our chats earlier on another thread, where you had observed that the roasts have become darker over the last few years. One of the other popular roaster (head roaster) emailed confirming it. In their case, they attributed to they using a cast-iron based roasting machine or something like that.
