There used to be a thread on CFUK where people could ask for/provide recommendations for coffee shops to try. I couldn’t find anything similar here so thought to test the waters by setting the ball rolling.

Anyway, I’m off to Riga next month so thought I would ask for recommendations for coffee shops and/or local roasters to visit.

Thanks in advance

A huge shout out to Store St espresso. New branch been open a few weeks, got chatting to the baristas today on my second visit when I said their flat white with Red Brick tastes completely different to mine. Got into machines, recipes and grinders over a long chat and how to pull less bitter shots.

Turns out they serve 15g in, 32g out in32 seconds but at only 6 bar. Very different to my old regular (already switching to them) that did a 20.5 : 19 ristretto. (Back to trying the flow profiling!)

Other then the knowledge they also gave some recommendations on hand grinders and, to rule out discrepancy on my dialling in, offered to grind a few shots worth of my beans on their grinder to try at home.

Top chat, service and amazing coffee.

If you ever find yourselves in Lausanne, try the Coffee Page shop. It was a lucky discovery following a Tripadvisor suggestion for a good coffee shop near the central train station.

    https://www.coffee-page.com/

It was a small, cosy, sophisticated (and very silent!) place which at that point was ran by a single person that was managing to do everything herself: taking orders, grinding, brewing, serving in the table, offering recommendations. She made me a sublime flat white with distinct floral notes and great aftertaste. On asking her she said that she used these Honduran beans from some French roasters:

I acknowledge that there might be a little it of confirmation bias involved, as it was also one of the most expensive coffees I have ever had (6 swiss francs), even for the Swiss standards!

Went back there at 5.30 pm for a second round but they had closed down…😞

Grahamsphillips I have heard good recommendations for suited and sey, also la Cabra for pastries. Depends whereabouts you are in new York and what sort of coffee you enjoy

Coffee Roaster. Home: Sage Dual Boiler, Niche Zero, Ode v2 (SSP), 1zpresso ZP6 Work: Eagle One Prima EXP, mahlkonig e80s, Mazzer Philos and lots more

Coffee NOT cake! We like espresso/cortado and pour over. Generally light to medium roast

Suited seems to be the place lots of people talk about, they use a good selection of US and international roasters. Seems to be on the Nordic light side of things but they care a lot about the coffee. Sey is a great roaster, La Cabra still has good coffee (not exactly my cup of tea) but it would be remiss to not mention the pastries based on what people say about them

In case anyone finds themselves in Bristol and needs a recommendation, the following are good. I thought it might be useful to specify the machine they use, in case anyone wants to try a coffee from a particular machine.

    • Small Street Espresso, Small Street
      La Marzocco FB80

    • Coffee Under Pressure, Park Street
      Victoria Arduino White Eagle

    • Full Court Press, Broad Street
      La Marzocco Strada

    • Little Victories, Wapping Wharf
      Victoria Arduino Black Eagle

    • Coffee & Beer, Cotham Hill
      Victoria Arduino Eagle One

    • Wogan Coffee, Clement Street
      Conti MC Ultima

If any other Bristolians have any recommendation I’d love to hear them!

    Decent DE1 • Mazzer Philos

Not from bristol but have one suggestion to add:

Radical roasters, st marks road, la marzocco Linea PB

Edit: would also probably add sweven coffee to the list, haven’t been to their cafe but really enjoy their beans.

Sweven café, north st., Modbar AV and Weber eg-1 for pourover
