Hmm. They are claiming even pressure distribution based on hydroStatic principal, but the act of tamping is dynamic, so it kind of seems flawed from a first principal point of view. I’m in the USA, but would want to read a bit more before sending them money.

tompoland I know I poked fun at it, but I did mug myself out of £9 recently on a distributor/stirrer needle thing. Enthusiastically built it and used it 3 times before realising for me, it was a waste of time.

Yes I got dudded, but clearly I still have hope….so perhaps it will be the next big thing.

I tried a similar exercise but with a 12″ rotisserie skewer I happened to have laying around. It can report it did successfully break up clumps, though it would probably also have broken up clumps of clay dug out of the ground. Or concrete. It might have been a smidge on the large side.

I was shocked, shocked, I tell ya, when I found it made no difference to my coffee,over just not bothering at all.

More seriously, I do take Tom’s point about “just like trying things”. I get it …. the idea I mean, not the implant tamper. It’ll be interesting to see what he think of it.

tompoland If you want to amuse yourself for an hour or so, hop over to another forum somewhere (hint: down under) and go back to the first posts about the Decent when it was pre production. People are polite on this forum (the REAL "friendliest UK coffee forum) but they were plenty of harsh knockers about a machine that James Hoffman has recently described as the biggest influence on espresso making in the last decade.

Another way of amusement on said forum is to go to the Niche Zero thread. I actually started it, linked to Dave’s review, and the grinder got quickly dismissed with all sorts of “constructive” comments. Fast forward 3 years and boy they were wrong! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Sadly, no. I might be prepared to let it go for a paltry grand or so if it was. No, mine’s about that length, but much thinner, stainless steel and is an accessory for the electric rotisserie in our oven.

I’m all for keeping it simple, but I recently got a WDT tool having thought it was a gimmick for so long, and for me it has genuinely made a big difference to my shot-to-shot consistency. No more, ‘what the hell happened there?’, when all things being equal, a shot runs 10 seconds faster than the last 2 or 3!

Maybe you lot already have such top notch puck prep that you don’t need it 😉

Those spinning distribution tools are a complete waste of time though, I’ll give you that.

Same for me with WDT. Made a huge difference visually in the number of gushers from my bottomless. Taste-wise, the improved consistency from better puck prep really helps in figuring out beans. Relatively cheap too. Best value coffee related thing I’ve spent on this year. Still didn’t stave off the upgrade-itis though

Unfortunately I had to abandon my attempts to test it due to worsening arthritis in my wrists.

(My wrists are pain free other than impact type actions like hammering and tamping. Thanks for asking!)

Initial observations reveal two interesting features that don’t normally coexist in one tamper:

A) it is not sprung

B) it has a collar

Most tampers that are not sprung have no collar. Having no spring and a collar means that the puck height has to be just right.

I passed the tamper on to another Australian Coffee Snobs forum member to test so I will check with him and post his report back here.

Because of the wrist arthritis I’m using a Puqpress for 58mm baskets and a Malwani tamper for the 49mm basket https://www.malwani.de/english-1/shop/precision-tamper/

The Malwani tamper is 622 grams and because it is so heavy I simply place it on top of the basket and the weight does most of the work. I use DavecUK’s finger technique to finish the tamp but very little force is required.

In fact the Malwani works so well for me that I have another two on the way for the 58mm baskets with the aim of eliminating the need for the Puqpress and freeing up some much needed counter space.

I really really like that this is a well-made completely new style tamper that has had thought put into it and it’s selling for about £40. Whatever you think, you can’t claim they’re just making things up just to rip people off like some companies #ahem# weber #ahem#.

hthec Yes, the concept is tamping with the gel creates even density even if the puck isn’t level to begin with but density is the important thing….whether or not it turns out to be true in practice is another matter.
