According to everything I have read, the Rolls Royce of tomatoes used for making pizza are San Marzano. So, I thought I would get some. However, when looking at the time I couldn’t find any in the regular supermarkets so went and ordered some on-line. Even at almost £3 for a standard 400g tin I still went ahead and bought 6 tins.
Anyway…I was in Waitrose yesterday and saw they were selling some fresh San Marzano tomatoes. Hoozah! I thought. I’ll buy a pack and can whizz em up and make a sauce to go onto my pizza. At the checkout I extolled the virtues of the San Marzano to the checkout chappie explaining how they got their reputaion for taste because they are grown in a specific region of Italy in volcanic soil making them famed for their balanced flavour that combines sweetness, tomatoey intensity, and just the right amount of acid.…blah…blah…blah!
He looked at me with a world weary eye and pointed to the package…
Can’t say I know of any volcanoes in Yorkshire. Perhaps they ship in volcanic soil to grow them in, but I doubt it somehow. Yes, San Marzano in name, but I guess not quite the same in flavour.
