These seem to work well. I typically roast a little over 400g at a time and 200g will fit into one container which means the beans in the second container are not exposed to air until after I have finished the first one.

They seem to form a nice tight seal. The black ones are AU$20 from Amazon (GBP 11.50?).

I do own two of those, and often use to store freshly roasted beans that I roast myself (or try to at least! 😂).

I suppose they only remove so much air, in a sense that, if you only have the container half-full (or half-empty) there’s not much benefit. Therefore, ideally, it’s only effective when they are full to the brim.

I’m currently looking at options to store c.100g beans so this probably isn’t it. I’d like a small airscape, but I’m just not willing to pay £25 for it!

PortafilterProcrastinator - Personally, In my opinion, I think Airscape containers are useless :-)

I’ve used one for a while and, in my experience, there is absolutely no benefit in them with regards to preserving coffee for more than a few days - in which case you might as well simply keep the coffee in the bag where they came from or in a simple sealed container.

There was even a discussion about all of this which started on CFUK and carried on in this forum around December 2021.

MediumRoastSteam I find the airscape discussion very interesting and confusing. When I started freezing, I was sure I could taste a difference, but I’ve done some loose/ informal testing and now I’m not so sure - which is potentially indicative of comments from others in terms of the speed of decridation of thawed beans.

Vacuum sealing simply isn’t an option for me, so I’m thinking about various options that don’t involve a big outlay.

Your comment on a sealed container is interesting. I could simply try using a jar for 100g beans which would last me 2 days. Start there and see if I can tell the difference.

MediumRoastSteam I think you’re right in regard to freshness, or at least very close to being 100% right.

Testing that I did showed less than a 5% difference in the rate of decline, as measured by pour volume, over 7 days. And given the DIY nature of the test, that could probably be explained by any number of variable I had not factored in.

That test was between a normal one way valve bag being opened and shut several times a day over the week, versus beans left in a full and presumably air tight container with a one way valve.

Bear in mind that my tests are amateurish at best and are not double blind, peer reviewed or being published in Lancet!

Still, over a week, not much difference.

But I like the size of the Tightvac because it makes the pouring of the beans for weighing easier and they are also a convenient size to travel with.

That is a great idea. Right now, my thinking is that a jar with a standard lid for storgage over a few days would probably be as effective as anything.

Certainly, after much playing around, I’ve given up on vacuum sealing. With the acceptance of defeat on my vac sealing theories, I only freeze now when I have surplus beans in danger of passing their best by date. (And I grind the beans frozen because I find that gives me the best viscosity and flavor).
