The Eureka Single Dose is now out in the wild. Is anyone thinking of buying one?

That document above is crazy marketing nonsense. I vote we remove from here as it's entirely bias and misleading. @"LMSC"#p944 ^^^.

When you read that doc (not sure if you have) you will see what I'm talking about. The claims they (Eureka) are making are baseless and without any substance what so ever. (rant over) 🤣

When I was toying with the idea of purchasing the niche zero I stumbled across lots of stuff online and that was one of them, I didn’t pay much attention after first glance tbh. I don’t believe it would be helpful to someone considering the comparisons either if they were looking for meaningful info

Mine is being delivered later today. I’ll give my thoughts. I had a Niche in the past but didn’t get on with the flavours in comparison to my Atom 75.

Rob1 Wow that PDF posted above is awful. To give the Niche 1 star for espresso and 4 for filter is backwards, if anything. The reality is it performs very well for both

That PDF is so wrong in many ways. I’m actually gobsmacked that Bella Barista actually publishes it.

Now, for me, the best bit is:

“Burrs setting unchanged after the maintenance process”

Mignon single dose: ✅
Niche Zero: “Impossible”
DF-64: “Impossible”

Now, we all know that this is not true with regards to the Niche. As long as you don’t move the calibration mark, you can clean take the grinder apart, put it back together and you know that, if you align the dot back to where it was before, it will be exactly that.

Niche Zero: Wood base shaped
DF-64: Plastic fork

Errrrr…. According to Niche’s Indigogo site, they also use oak. The DF-64, the fork is metal, not plastic (but I can’t confirm as I don’t own one - but I remember when I saw it at Dave’s). Besides… There’s no fork on the Mignon, so what are they on about…

Whoever wrote that document should be ashamed of such a poor and inaccurate job.

Yes, but technically they are right there. In order to remove the burrs on the Niche, you have to change the grind setting. It doesn’t matter that you can instantly get back to exactly the same setting when you put it back together. They’re just saying you don’t have to change the grind setting on the Mignon. Also, it doesn’t matter that the adjustment of the Mignon is the worst of the three for both making small adjustments to dial in and moving back and forth between grind settings. They just say it’s patented. They aren’t telling lies they’re just omitting the truth or presenting things in deceptive or misleading ways. E.g the Niche base is made of wood and the Mignon is made of Oak….well they’re both made of Oak so they’re not wrong since Oak is wood.

Despite how distasteful their advertising is for this at least they are actually charging less for this than the Mignon XL (which has an Oled screen and timer) so that’s something. Presumably, they’re the same 65mm burrs that go into the atom. It’s nice that the price point for these bigger burr grinders is dropping and they’re in smaller form factors too but would like to see entirely new burrs and a chamber designed for single dosing rather than a short hopper with some bellows.

Good points Rob. In fact, I quite like the Mignon’s adjustment. I think it’s a lot better then the others, if you use for espresso only.

Indeed, I really like the way the adjustment works, but I’ll need to see one in action to see if it’s still throwing chaff all over itself before I get one!

I think the eureka specialita is a great grinder. The stepless adjustment is actually very easy to use and consistent. The issue i found was that I was almost at its limit and feared if I got beans needing a finer grind it wouldn’t be capable. The last 2 or 3 bean types I was using (only medium roast) had it just back from burrs touching. I then got the niche and have been around setting 20, so, no worries in that regard now. I only single dose and this was one of the reasons I wanted a niche. Tbh the specialita is well capable of single dosing, and the hopper design handles the popcorning enough for my use anyhow. I still have mine, it is up for sale but unless I get my asking price I’ll be happy to keep it, it’s a very well built grinder easy to use and maintain. It was also interesting to taste the difference between flat and conical on the same bean but they’re just different. I also love the niche 😂

New to the forum, but been following this thread closely.

Received my Eureka Oro today - here are my first impressions:

Great uniformity for espresso grind
Middling to poor uniformity for courser grinds (inconsistencies starting at V60 and getting progressively worse toward the course end)
Bellows are pointless - even with the hopper closed, more air comes out the side of the hopper than through the grounds chute
Minimal retention (measuring 0.1g without using the bellows)
Reasonably quiet; similar to the Baratza Forte, but a little more shrill
Beautiful fit and finish, aside from the plastic bean hopper
Minimal mess - doesn’t throw chaff or grounds on to the grinder or surrounding bench

Overall, I’m very pleased with this as an espresso grinder. It’s absolutely on par with the Niche, but this is not a brew grinder.

One other point to note - my burrs locked after running a few hundred grams of coffee through. I had to take the top cover off, remove the top burr, blow the unit out and reassemble. It’s been fine since - I’ve put just over a kilo through to make sure that everything’s now okay.

Just opened it up for the first time, and cleaned out all “moveable grounds” from the burrs, sweep arms and exit chute. Measured 0.3g. In my head at least, this would be the rough amount of grounds that could find its way into the next shot. Bellows may improve this but if I do get them, I’m not sure I’d bother with the added workflow step. I’m happy with the performance as it is.

I think Eureka may have shot themselves in the foot a bit. The over the top marketing material, the inclusion of bellows which implies the necessity of bellows (handing +1 to the Niche straight away) and the lazy design choices (fake on/off button) may distract from the fact that this is actually a very good single dose espresso grinder.

I’m not an expert, but I am getting 0 retention with mine. As for the bellow, did you fit it correctly as mine is not losing any air, the hopper edge/rim slips into the bellow to create a seal.

I believe you are measuring dose consistency rather than retention or exchange. Consistency is indeed 0 in my experience too. But what you are likely doing is putting 20g in and getting 20g out but 0.1-0.3g of that 20g that comes out is old grinds that was in the grinder when you put the 20g in.
