  • Mazzer SJ Worth The Upgrade Over Mini?

Hey Folks,

Life has gotten in the way and I haven’t had time to repair my Mazzer mini (58mm burrs).

I’ve come across a used Super Jolly (64mm burrs) for 250 USD, lower than the usual going rate of approx 500 USD.

Seller also has SSP High Uniformity burrs available for an additional 155.

Curious if folks think it is worth grabbing? You can read a lot of stuff around the net, but trust the folks here.

Man, I wish that Major for sale on this board was in the US.

Thanks!

Is Mazzer SJ worth it with Vesuvius?

Yeah!100%

This will be for espresso on my Vesuvius. I prefer fruit forward lighter roasts. I typically drink them straight without milk. But do like to keep body in my shots. Smart question!

I voted yes because even small improvements are worth an extra $250, at least in my book although I certainly appreciate that my level of obsession is peculiar, to say the least. The difference in the cup is unlikely to be detectable if it’s only a size different in the burr. I think they are both flat burrs but if the geometry of the burrs is different between the two then the flavor would quite likely be significant.

And in addition, I value visual improvements as well. and the SJ is a visually impressive grinder.

For reference, I once again recommend checking out the old Titan Conicals Shootout on Home-Barista where a Super Jolly was used as a comparison. As you rightly pointed out, they’re pretty cheap for what you get and it opens up a whole new world of burr options - 64mm is the current fashion - which a Super Jolly can handle without stress.

id love to see this new era of grinders compared to the older stuff like that, on a pure taste thing, yes work flow has got better etc but on flavour..

The word ‘jolly’ in Italian means the joker of the card pack - thus a wildcard able to be used for multiple purposes. I wonder if the ‘Super Jolly’ name was chosen thinking of that.

I have to agree that would be something very interesting - and bang for your buck/build quality is another thing, speaking as an old codger who likes that stuff.

CoyoteOldMan Love it, that’s brilliant….and who knows? It’s more than capable enough IMHO

Hey folks. Wanted to provide an update. I missed out on that Super Jolly, but kept looking around. I found a posting for a used Major. Turned out Ritual coffee was getting rid of a few Roburs and Majors. 300 USD for a doser Major, and I pick it up next week. I’ll need to get new burrs and setup for single dose, but to say I’m excited is an understatement!

I’m 99% sure I’ll start with stock burrs since the SSP are pretty pricey and they can be a future upgrade. However, I did find these but need to do some research to learn more. I have a UK freight forwarder so if anyone finds SSP burrs for sale for cheap in the UK, lemme know :)

I figure for 300 bucks I could always sell if I don’t like it and make my money back or maybe make a little bit if I clean it up.

      There just coated OEM burrs.
