It’s essentially a Rocket Cellini, just rebadged La Pavoni.

I loose track of who owns who now. I thought Astoria owned rocket…but then Astoria are owned by Ryomi srl along with other brands. e.g. CMA Macap etc.

La Pavoni are owned by Smeg.

There are very few owner companies around now for prosumer kit.

Quickmill (Chinaglia), ACS (Cortese), ECM and Profitec (Michael Hauck), Bezzera. There are perhaps a few more, but it’s really worrying. My experience when large corporates get involved, innovation stops and consumer needs no longer reach the end design. This is because it has to get through corporate sales, marketing, accounting development etc.. etc.. and usually dies en route.

DavecUK unfortunately all too true. The money walks into, the MBAs follow, careers depend on not making mistakes and making mistakes is integral to innovation.

tompoland Still are, don’t know for how long though, corporates are swallowing up so many companies. I think Macap got bought a while ago…and a new grinder on the drawing board didn’t get launched (I think).

I also wanted to add something here. When a lot of these companies go to corporate ownership, we run the risk of having machines built with bespoke parts the bigger the Holding company the more likely that is. It tends to be the smaller independent companies that use the generic parts, for obvious reasons. We run the risk of machines actually becoming more difficult to repair as time goes on, because as we all know, stuff from large corporate companies often isn’t easy to repair.

I suppose the barrier to entry for new players gets steeper too. All the more remarkable the success of Decent, Weber and perhaps Nurri too.

But is this cyclical?

Do people start to hanker for the boutique, crafted machines after a while e.g. Strietman, Helor, Argos and co. There still seems to be solid demand at that end of the market and perhaps that where platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo come in. Funding for emerging manufacturers who see a gap in the market and fill it with something interesting and innovative

Some people do - those that for whatever reason take the hobby “seriously” (whatever the hobby is: coffee, audio, motorbikes, cycling, …). However they are seldom (never?) a large group, which limits the size and number of boutiques.
