Always a worry using tools next to such nice metal and chrome plating, one slip doesnt bare thinking about.

Are they lock tite in? I know the minima steam tips on mine and hvl machine were to the point he destroyed his tip, ooher

I just used a large crescent wrench. Didn’t require much force. And for an update it’s been 2 weeks since I loosened the bolts and have yet to hear even a tiny squeak. No sign of extra marring on the side of the handle either.

Just make sure that you are moving the wrench upward on both sides to loosen the bolts.

DenisS This is also my understanding as suggested by gus6464; however, @pinky-and-me’s earlier post suggested clock wise for right and anti clock wise for the left but move them bottom to top, which I found as ambiguous — at least for me.

A photo showing the direction of loosening the bolt will be useful for the Evo owners. Thx

So the threads are not normal but backwards? you mean you loose them turning clockwise how you look directly at them?

The two bolts are different so you have to loosen them in oposite directions. DenisS photo is correct for that side (clockwise turn). For the other side you have to turn the bolt anti-clockwise when facing the bolt.

Stand in front of the machine, put wrench on bolt with handle pointing to the floor. Now push handle up to loosen. This is valid for both bolts.

If you are looking at the front machine:

The bolt on the left of the lever is regular thread. Meaning you go counter clockwise to loosen.

The bolt on the right of the lever is reverse threaded. Meaning you go clockwise to loosen.

So in your picture that is the correct way to loosen both bolts. The wrench moves upward on both sides to loosen them.

As you look at the machine from the front, the right bolt loosens clockwise (as in Dennis’s photo) the left bolt loosens anti clockwise.

Okay managed to loose the right screw by lifting up the wrench. Just so you know how tight mine was, I managed to lift up the front of the machine about 5 cm.

Now the lever action is smooth and way less force required to pull it down (20-30%). Glad I fixed this before sending it the new owner.

Ok, so after all this talk of tightness of the bolts I thought that I would see for myself. Using the socket from my impact wrench (which has an internal hex which is less likely to slip and mark the bolt), with a breaker bar to unscrew. It was a bit of an anti-climax, both bolts loosened easily, once you know that the right hand bolt has a left hand thread. There may be differences between groups but mine was no problem, an ordinary socket with a ratchet would have done it.

I didn’t notice the damage until i read this… pffff. I did it whilst the machine is hot to to help make it easier to loose the bolts..

Back the bolts in until you have about half a mm of space between the bolt and the grouphead. Taking it out too much without seeing how deep the axle is inside the bearing can cause problems down the line.

For some people if these bolts were on very tight it might too late and the bearings could be shot.

But in the end these bolts shouldn’t have been tightened this much from the factory. The threading is just there as a guide for the axle on the bearing so there is no reason to tighten them at all.
