Hugonl37 Haven’t ordered myself, still not sure I need it. For medium/dark roast it seems the classic grind and tamp works fine, for very finicky light roasts it seems I need every trick in the book to get a good extraction. I tend to waste so much of these expensive specialty beans dialing them in I’m starting to prefer the good ol’ Italian 70/30 medium roasts mostly haha … maybe my grinder doesn’t produce enough fines to restrict the flow, maybe I should buy a C40 for this.. much respect for the people with 98mm HU burrs balancing on the sharp end of a knife with their extraction.
For my Ultra grinder I have both 98mm as 80mm Ditting LS option. For the filter roasts from Friedhats I use at the moment, I prefer the 98mm SSP HU burrs. It is a challenge, I agree with you.
I am experimenting with less strong inner springs, which makes it easier to pull a filter roast with HU burrs. Right now I have this spring installed: It only adds 1 bar to the outer spring. But I like it. Filter roasts seem to taste best with Turbo shots. And those are a lot easier with 7 instead of 10,5 bar.
Another nice spring I found is this one. It’s stronger, resulting in 8.5 bar. Also with this spring I had nice results with filter roasts/98mmSSPHU. The only problem is that it is not stainless steel. What the Dutch reseller told me is that the stainless steel version has not been produced yet. Spring rate is a bit lower from SS, but I expect a nice 8 bar. If Paolo is still interested in offering a pressure possibility between 10,5 bar (standard innerspring) and 6 bar (no inner spring) this one is great. The outer diameter is 34mm which exactly fits the bottom ring. It could use a little support on the inside at the top because the inner diameter is bigger than the shaft where it sits on.
