After a lot of research and a little waiting, I officially took delivery of my new Evo last week! Thank you to Dave and to all who contribute so much in this forum, you really helped me with this decision.

I’ve had it for a little over a week now, still a bit of a learning curve, but it is my third lever machine so it’s just the small intricacies of the machine at this point. I am making some delicious espresso!

I have run into one small issue with the coffee dosing system. At this point I’m only using the manual setting, which was working normally for the first few days. Then it started to, with the lever still down and preinfusion set to 5 bar, increase the pressure and switch from the preinfusion timer to the brew timer. Now a few days later I can’t even get the pre infusion timer to initiate, only the brew timer engages, and intermittently it will stay at 5 bar until I release the lever, sometimes it will automatically increase the pressure to 8 or 10 bar with the lever still down.

I will send ACS an email asking about this, but wanted to see if anyone here has experienced issues with the dosing system and if there are any simple remedies.

Hi and welcome.

The problem with the dosing system it’s a bit strange. The system it’s set to start the preinfusion timer when in the group there is 1 bar and switch to brew when 6,8 it’s reached. Note that the system will not reset if the pressure it’s not at 0 and also if the brew timer blinking. A video could help to understand much better what’s going on. Thanks

Thanks, I did start with 2, but prefer a higher preinfusion pressure for light roasts.

Regardless, the dosing system is still malfunctioning. It’s erratic despite the actual preinfusion pressure.

BillyG Could you retry setting the PI lower, say at 2.

IMO, you are already extracting at 5. You may not want to set the PI above 2-3.

Can 5 somehow trigger the brew function? It might be nothing to do with the issue you are facing.

With the explanation from Paulo (I had been wondering at what pressure the timer switched over)

I would suggest you lower your preinfusion pressure to 4 bars even if you do not want to, but just to help fault find, or find if you have a fault or not

I’d suggest, and without seeing a video it’s difficult to understand your issue, that depending on your grind you are inadvertantly hitting the 6.8 bar and cancelling the preinfusion phase.

Even at 2 bars set point depending on grind I’ve seen it hit 2.6 bars on a “top up” which I’d suggest is just due to the great performance of the rotary pump and not a real world issue.

Maybe 6 bars is a little high for standard operation is what I’m suggesting regardless at what spec wording you are going to throw back at me.

I just reread your message and would suggest what I’m saying above is true, on a “top up” you are cancelling the preinfusion infusion when the higher pressure is hit. This is most probably not a fault but due to the grind size, and high set point you are using.

Hello Paolo! Thank you for the response.

Attached is a video. The dosing system is set to manual, with 5 bar preinfusion. You can see that while the lever is down, the preinfusion timer does not start, and the pressure rises from 5 to 8 bar at around 9 seconds, then 10 bar as the lever is lifted.

Now, here’s some more strangeness. If I change the dosing system to either pressure or time, then change it back to manual, the pressure stays at 5 until I left the lever, the preinfusion timer does not count, but the brew timer counts.

Yes, I’m used to levers. If my wife wouldn’t have wanted the dosing system I would have not added it to the order. I drink the initial espresso shot, and I drink the leftovers too :) Easier and tastier than cleaning the drip tray everyday!

You do not show what the set point is and from the angle it’s difficult to see the pressure gauge to see what it hits .

Could you do the same video but with the set point between 2 and 4 bars please. .

Wow! Hope you aren’t kidding! Unless I am mistaken and not understood this properly, that’s what get flushed out by Evo 2 where ever one chooses to end the shot or end below 6 or 7 bars. I am hearing that some one enjoys drinking that for the first time. I am sorry, I can’t help think how one could drink the lovely espresso from Evo and this considering the below!

BillyG Believe it or not, I do know what I’m doing. This is my third lever machine, 7th espresso machine, 5th grinder, and I’ve been making espresso for decades. I realize that I may not have all of your experience or number of machines ;)

I appreciate all of the advice, but I would prefer to not have to completely change the way I pull my preferred light roast shots.

First, I am sorry if you do not like my replies to yours’ aimed at Jake. Second, can we be a little more kind please? Jeez, it is a coffee forum discussing a cuppa! Third, may we know the levers you had owned please ? Fourth, no one questioned your experience, knowledge or your taste profile. If 5 bars PI is what you like, so be it. It is your money, your machine and your choice. But, please remember folks are only trying to help, considering you just had a new Evo 2. Fifth, unlike other levers, to my knowledge, this lever is a class apart. It is the best and gets the best out of the puck. The extraction and the flavour profile will be different and one may have to re-learn and re-adjust as what worked elsewhere won’t on the Evo!

Can’t quite see what the gauge hits but don’t think it indicates an issue.

Can’t do this kind of testing without coffee …. Pumping to a dead end is not the same as pumping to a resistance.

It’s simply over shooting as you get the pressure wave when the pressure hits the quite finely ground puck….this causes it to bounce above the pressure required to trigger the brew timer and stop the PI timer (which never gets started.

Do you have the safety system?

I suspect there’s not much you can do except lower the PI to it do3esn’t bounce within that range.

It might be that @Paolo_Cortese can ask for a small software change so that it can be applied to the smaller board. Possibly to wait 1 second or so before switching across from PI to brew. If this was user configurable, you could have wait 0 - 3 seconds), so the user could change the “sensitivity” of the switch over.

Thank you Dave, this definitely explains the machine’s behavior. My wife did an afternoon latte and lowered the pre infusion to 4 bar and went fairly coarse on the grinder and the pre infusion timer did work, and the pressure stayed at 4 until she lifted the lever. But, this shot was extremely fast and sloppy.

I will explore a lower preinfusion pressure with a more fine grind and see if I can find a happy medium.

Else, if @Paolo_Cortese can implement a software update for finer grinds and light roasts, that would be appreciated :)! I can’t be the only one doing this?

Just in case Paolo, Dave are considering working on a new revised firmware for the dosing controller can I add a suggestion / request please:

Once the system is in dump mode could you add a routine to close the dump valve prior to timeout if the stop button is pressed.

Primary reason for asking is saving shots that were course ground for some reason! I know the correct answer is grind finer before someone jumps in 😎☕
