Following on from the above comments and expanding on what @DavecUK said about sucking in air….
Have you checked the tubes in your water tank.
See below

The pump suction, the one with the mesh filter, should be Laid flat in the bottom of the tank so it is completely submerged At all times. Mine is plumbed so the level you see here is what my system maintains. This would be your minimum prior to topping up
The fill level probe should he a minimum of 30mm from the bottom of the tank so there is no way for the pump to suck in air .
Lever Adjustment

Ensure the bottom screw/ nut is adjusted so there is just a paper width of movement back and forth. I e. Pump engages as soon as lever is pressed but definately Not so tight that it is partially engaged at rest .
The black nylon block. No single right or wrong here But id suggest adjust as per my photo.
Done like this my pump is fully on by the time my main lever if Vertical.
I pull it to vertical, pause for the pump to engage and then slowly continue to pull down the main lever.
You will get a feel for the speed. if the pressure builds and rhe pump goes off early you sre too slow .
This method will give absolute minimum air in the cylinder without what is referred to as pre charging.
Now, im not saying theres anything wrong with pre charging before anyone jumps in just that my method is adequate for an idle Derbyshire man☕
