Has anyone considered adding a needle valve in the flow path leading to the group head?

While this may slow down the amount of time it takes to fill the group with water upon pulling down the lever, adding a needle valve may introduce an interesting variable into taste profiling with the evo leva.

Hi All,

Update on the leaking group . Emailed Paolo with the video (ignoring all the other bits and bobs). He sent an exploded diagram and said change the larger piston seal. I took off piston and swapped it and the teflon gasket which looked a little scarred. Added a touch of Grease and reassembled. One cup and no leak, but obviously will have to wait and see.

What is a little strange is that the lower of the group has a dent and some wierd blue stuff that doesn’t come off (with water and cloth - don’t want to tarnish the chrome so reluctant to try cleaner without checking/thought).

Are you talking about the mark inside the bore (or is in a droplet or artifact), green arrow, or on the group outside red arrows?

danielpugh The green stuff might be because of the water that was coming up, you could just gently try cleaning with puly and a Microfibre, if that doesn’t work a touch of white vinegar on a MF cloth then rinse off. The dent won’t make any difference, theres no sealing going on at the top.

DavecUK I think the coloured (blue) stuff is something related to manufacturing - chemical residue or similar. Its on the opposite side to the leak, around the thread not near the bore. Strange..

danielpugh Could you check the nut please ? It looks localised on the area, which holds the nut. The other side looks clean though.

I had the blue stuff on mine too. Looked like some sort of loctite they used to secure the bolts to the bottom. You can scrape it off with your fingernail or a bank card.

@pinky-and-me tried scratching, but didn’t get too hacky/stabby with no effect. As long as is it’s not poisonous or causing a leak = not bothered. 3 more cups and no water out the side, so fingers crossed good for now. The new seal protrudes noticeably where the old one didn’t, so probably fine. Just got to fix the wonky steam arm next, which is more of a job as one side secured inside the case. Tried before and it was too difficult to get at, but managed to get a smaller adjustable spanner so one for next weekend…

It doesn’t mention if we can boil water in this. Here is the inside view. Is it safe to boil water for pour overs like V60 please?

Don’t want to buy a kettle.

LMSC It appears to no longer be available…I actually have one for watering plants, looking inside, I am sure I wouldn’t drink out of it. It’s stainless steel, but like no stainless I have ever seen. Here’s the question you need to ask yourself….why would they paint a stainless can inside??

DavecUK I have no idea why would anyone do that, unless it isn’t. I have been thinking about this during the last few days as I used it to fill Evo’s reservoir as it was convenient and wasn’t feeling comfortable doing that.

This uncomfortness is one reason why I opened out the water tank to give a better access. Perhaps, I will get a gooseneck kettle that can be used as a 2-in-1 : use it to fill the tank and boil water on the hob for V60!
