My EVO also has the same wands as yours and they do work well for me with the small Motta pitcher (330ml IIRC).
I'm using the 2 holes tip and have reduced boiler temperature to 127C. Controlling the frothing was difficult with higher temperatures and the small milk pitcher.
By-the-way, where did you read the suggestion for cutting the return tube shorter so it does suck up water from water tank in the FAQ, as I don't recall putting this in it ?
