  • What’s in your cup this morning ?

My cup this morning was a flat white with: https://shop.darkwoodscoffee.co.uk/products/colombia-el-placer-yellow-fruits?variant=44003700474081

Holy Moly! That’s an insane cup. I this is going to be one of those memorable coffees. As soon as I cracked the bag open I could smell passion fruit and mango. Incredible. I then checked the description of the bag (you know I’m not a fan of tasting notes, and always said it means nothing to me) and bang! Passion fruit and mango! In that list the only other coffees which are memorable was one of the very first Rocko Mountain Reserve from Foundry, the “Banana coffee” from the old LSOL by Rave and there was a Strawberry coffee I got from I can’t remember where - Maybe it was North Star.

I don’t do filter coffee, but I can only imagine this coffee as filter. Amazing. I don’t think this is an every day kind of coffee - pretty much like Port or Sauternes not being your everyday table wine.

A Matter of Concrete - Rosado. Thermal shock washed pink bourbon from Jonny Martinez at El Jaragual in Colombia.

Tasty 😋

This afternoon actually….

A pint of espresso tonic. With that coffee that resembles passion fruit. 😋

7 days later

Mediumroaststeam’s iced nitro milk splashed.

With Darkwoods Arboretum.

Into the milk pitcher:

  • lots of ice;
  • add a splash of milk (optionally);
  • add water until just under the spout;
  • Pour a espresso into it;
  • steam it until the ice melts.

Pour into a glass - on ice or just as is.

Enjoy!

The version without the splash of milk looks like this:

This one made with Darkwoods “El Placer” - anaerobic fermented, “yellow fruits”.

Those with the dark woods. Where’s your grind at, I’m currently on 2 on the duo, stock ims basket, not a comp and 20g is giving 36g in 17s

    Crankhouse, Colombia, Edinson Argote, Finca Quebraditas, anaerobic washed Sidra - I personally didn’t get much of the turkish delight (my girlfriend did), nor pink lemonade notes, but the sweet, floral honeysuckle note was tangible and the overriding note for me. A pleasant coffee, right on the darker edge of roast tolerance for my taste, but solid & very distinctive. Average subjective liking score 7/9.

    All brews as pour over.

    axpetts I’ll give that a go next time I order - I’ve currently got the 2 El Salvador’s and they aren’t really cutting through the milk for a flat white. Just OK in the aeropress.

      Forgot my dog and hat was just paused not cancelled

      This turned up

      Reserving judgement just yet, but doesn’t fill me with confidence

      dfk41 I think all coffee should be sold as Coffee and name of country. I am sick of flipping back stories ……

      But surely you want to know the farmers name, his families names, what he had for breakfast and his leisure activities?

        dfk41 where’s the back story?

        If you mean the stuff that comes with it then you don’t have to read it, in the past dog and hat have been a good way to get into international roasters you generally wouldn’t of heard of

        Recently tho it’s been a bit shit

          Cuprajake There seems to be some serious disconnect between the picture that is painted and the quality of the actual roasted bean! Many years ago you could buy fags with packets of Camels on them, or bright green to show menthol…..now they are all in plain packets yet the contents vary but smokers know what they like and are not influenced……how many times do you buy a bean based on the tasting notes, then ask yourself for some of the drugs they were taking when they wrote that rubbish

            dfk41 now they are all in plain packets yet the contents vary but smokers know what they like and are not influenced

            But they know what they like having been attracted by the marketing originally.

            Tobacco was pushed by some of the biggest (and most iconic) ad campaigns in history. Silk Cut didn’t taste like torn purple silk and plenty of my friends smoked Marlboro reds yet none were cowboys.

            But when everything just tastes like smoke and tobacco leaves you have to differentiate yourself in other ways.

            I agree most of the stuff printed on coffee packaging and websites is nonsense but it’s just one extra way to encourage people who can’t try before they buy (99% of customers these days) to buy into their brand.

            I’ve known the Dark Arts founder since he started the company and theirs is a great example of the above. Their original marketing video made fun of all the coffee related bs. Their coffee is pretty good these days but early on they leant heavily into the ‘dark arts’ imagery with a firm tongue in cheek and it led to big success and rapid growth. And that wasn’t because of the quality of their coffee.

            ST30B Excellent. Let us know what you think. I’m quite enjoying the El Salvador honey “You can foam your own way”. Drinking it as straight espresso as I don’t do milk drinks much.

            Cracked open day 7…had a flat white this morning-very nice. Reminds me of Foundry Rocko Mountain.
