Neighbourhood Kenyan Medium Light I examined the beans in natural light. It doesn’t look that evenly roasted.
Flavours on the bag - Blackcurrant, Rhubarb and Goosebery
My initial thoughts before opening the bag - I am going to hate this as I clearly stay away from Rhubarb and Gooseberry in coffee. It is difficult for me at least to decide if the taste is from the coffee or as a result of a brewing / an espresso malfunction .
Reality: As soon as I opened the bag, I had a very pleasant and a strong aroma, which I can liken it to blackcurrant. This was good. I decided to take my Clever out as I was confident I can this pull off without risking a bad brew.
20g coffee, lower-end of espresso grind — the same grind size as before, 327g of water (a few g more than what I intended) and steeped for 33 minutes. I was aiming for 61.8g/l. It’s one of the Fib ratios. 😁
Two-thirds water in, powder and the rest to sink the crust.
The coffee did retain some good aroma even after a long steep. I have had ripe gooseberries in the past. The cup was nice and sweet like ripe gooseberry. But, it had the underlying tartness and tanginess that remained in my mouth a long after I finished drinking. It also has a bit of earthiness after taste. I can only correlate these after taste (tart, tangy and tangy) to Rhubarb and Blackcurrant. These after taste is one reason why I avoid these flavours on the bag. I do not know if the aftertaste is mainly from one of them or both.
These aftertaste notes were neither mouth puckering nor very pleasant. It was acceptable as I did like drinking the coffee as a black.
This bag sent free of cost by Neighbourhood when I purchased a KG of their decaf. It is very nice of them to have sent.
I don’t think I will pull an espresso from Evo, given the notes.
Edit:
Compared to Santa Ana, the tartness of the Kenyan (despite her notes), was a lot milder.
