Just to pick up on this, junior docs are not asking for a pay rise, they are asking for their pay to be restored to the equivalent amount they were getting paid 15 years ago. The key issue is there has been a freeze in public sector pay, and a big increase in inflation and the cost of living. £14 an hour* now does not allow you to live in the same way that £14 an hour did 15 years ago. They would like it increased to make up for the fifteen-year pay freeze and increase in living costs.

*this is what you start on as a junior doctor before tax, not taking into account unpaid overtime, and is less than you can earn working in Pret A Manger.

others: don’t confuse a parliament recess for a holiday. they have their local constitutency offices to attend and they should be engaged in their local community during many of those recess weeks.

MPs are another group that the media love to slag.

Publishers know the targets that we’ll tut tut about. They want eyeballs so they write stuff about professions that they think we love to hate. You see it all the time but especially so in the tabloid press.

Cuprajake NHS isnt underfunded imo it is very badly run, but hey most things run by the government are.

Look at private healthcare and see how efficient it is.

Privatisation doesn’t automatically mean the US style system either despite what a lot of people think.

I’m all for universal access to good healthcare but I’m also all for improving the aforementioned hellish conditions of medical staff and their pay.

I’d like to be proved wrong but sadly I can’t see how we’ll ever achieve both of the above under the NHS.

Some of our friends on the Continent seem to be on the right tracks.

I’m on the other end of the spectrum to any sort of union

As a small business owner over the last 18m I’ve seen our costs sky rocket.

We have had a 65% increase in paint and dry goods,

Gas has gone from 150pm to £400

Electric has gone from £300 to £800

I’ve had to increase prices, the first time in 20yrs, and were no better off, I work a 45hr week and pay myself £11 an hour.

My staff earn more than me.

So having a union is great when you’re in a massive employment industry, but small business are struggling more than ever.
