Hey was wondering if anyone can give some advice on this. This is my first espresso machine so pretty naieve but I think I have an issue with the Puristika. In short the only way that I can pull a shot fully is if I hold the brew lever in the upright poisition with my hand for the entirety of the shot. If I do not hold the lever as soon as there is a ramp up in pressure the lever moves slightly and disengages slightly from the pressure switch - can hear the click of the pressure switch. I have uploaded a video to Youtube which shows the issue - using a blind portafiler (don't want to waste beans) How long have I had this issue - well I think pretty much from the beginning (ony had 2 weeks). Took me a while to realise that I am not meant to hold the brew lever in place with my hand - watched some other videos and others do not have this issue. Before I play around and fiddle with things thought it best to see what you thought. I have also emailed the retailer for their advice as well. @"Beverast"#p1336 - that’s a problem very easily fixable I believe. You just need to adjust the switch. I don’t have an e61 anymore but I’m sure @"Elcarajillo"#46 or @"DavecUK"#1 can explain what to do. If however, there’s a major problem with the switch, it’s best tomdontsct your retailer as the machine is under guarantee. In fact, I’d contact your retailer first before doing anything. 👍

Just adjust the pressure switch out slightly. I checked mine and it's slightly unusual in the outside nut secures the switch to the case….**All the adjustment to push the pin forwards seems to be done from inside, and unfortunately I don't have a photo of that specific part.** If you take that photo of the back of the Microswitch, we should be able to help. Dave is correct, there is a lock nut on the back of the brew switch. You will need access to the back and a 14 mm or slim adjustable spanner. Slacken the front nut then rotate the (rear) locknut with fingers to allow the switch to move forward, (try about 1 turn) then retighten front nut and check the action. If not enough try another part turn until you are satisfied with position. Gently nip up front nut while holding the switch steady. NB. Turn off power before opening the case.

So, some sucess but not completely. Retailer got back to me and suggested exactly what everyone has advised here…move the switch forward. So, I took off the casing and have moved the panel at the back of the switch as far forward as it can go (there is no nut to fiddle with, just a panel). This has now eliminated the pump switching off, so that issue is fixed. However, the PID is still switching from the shot timer to the temperature reading when you get the ramp up in pressure - the brew lever is still moving ever so slightly which disengages from the pressure switch (can hear the click). As said the pump still goes, but the shot timer switches to the default temperature reading. You can see this in my Youtube video below. @"Beverast"#p1529 I asked you to take a photo/s of the back of your switch, because I don't have a photo of that part and I have a prototype. If you did, can you post them here, just in case we're missing something on how to adjust it, and I can check the wiring to the switch.

Dave, please see photos below. I thing the issue is now fixed. I ended up tightening up everything a little bit more and now the PID is not switching and there is no click. Still need to test it on a shot though. Interesting, they are using one switch for the pump and the other for the PID timer start stop. I guess they may have been worried about interference? Glad it's sorted now.

At least I got my timing just about right - 18grams in, 25 seconds, 36 grams out. Maybe a tad overextracted. My dealer says that there are some models of other brands with the same issue and as these models never received a formal fix, it is likely that the Puristika will not get a fix either….

Again had some email exchanges with my retailer. He said he enquired (I don’t know where) about this issue, and the response was:
“This is not a defect. This occurs in every E61 machine with Eco modus and ‘flow through’ (I don’t know if this is the correct translation?) boilers. You can speed up the heating process by flushing”

No clue what the value of this response is anymore to be honest

Beverast Thanks. I’m a buyer for this machine and not worried about them resolving the issue. I briefly owned a Profitec Pro 600 and it’s quality stuff. I see they are now offered via pre-order at Clive Coffee and Whole Latte Love in the US. Curious to know what the fix ends up being and would obviously prefer it arrive already squared away.

Re: the occasional thermosyphon stall on cold startup in the mornings.

This morning I got an e-mail from Michael the owner of ECM. They implemented my fix, and tested it, proving it works (as it should because a few manufacturers use my solution for vertical boilers, including ACS). I can’t really say any more because it’s up to ECM to announce it and roll it out to Retailers.

I would imagine it’s taken a while because they will have needed to test the fix…which as you can imagine, takes a while especially as the issue doesn’t happen every time

Unfortunately Bella Barista never emailed me back (probably missed) so it looks like it will be a waiting game and will depend how quickly ECM get onto the retailers. Puristika is still producing decent shots so I’m pretty happy - but will welcome the fix.

So will they now test for a few months and think all is well? What I’m questioning here is, how come they haven’t picked this up during the testing process?

What’s also very interesting is that James Hoffman reported thermosyphon stall on the Profitec 500 (That’s an HX machine, horizontal boiler) last year.

I had a Profitec 700 (dual boiler, vertical boilers) for two years, back in 2015, and it never, ever had a thermosyphon stall. Every day religiously it was ready for me first thing in the morning as I rolled out of bed.

Given ECM is all about precision, quality and “German” engineering… This truly baffles me. Feels to me ECM is not what it used to be.

N.B.: Profitec and ECM are sister companies.

The launch was delayed for 2 years, so it would have been mothballed, whilst they tried to manufacture the current range during a worldwide components shortage.

In my post I explained why it’s a solution that definitely works because I have suggested it to some other manufacturers. ACS use it on the Minima and have never had a thermosyphon stall from cold, or any other time. I won’t post the solution because it’s not formally announced yet.

DavecUK - I understand. I’m sure your solution work - I wasn’t questioning that. :-) - What I question is ECMs approach to product release. If it was mothballed, have they effectively released a beta product? In other words, should’t they have tested this themselves, i.e.: At the factory, or at the director’s office or kitchen, shouldn’t they be using the machine for a month or two? Given such an obvious flaw, was this ever sampled and tested by them prior to general release?

ECM certainly didn’t design it thinking it would have a problem. Additionally, it being an intermittent problem for a machine put on the back burner, for a handmade product, during a time when just finding parts and labor it tough, dealing with governments / chaos… it’s an understandable miss.

Shyte happens. I’m sure ECM is frustrated by it, but I’m sure they have also learned from it. I think what’s most important here is that nobody has the slightest worry that ECM won’t make it right.

Beverast Yes, it will stop the occasional cold group in the morning when running on a timer…because you’re simply not there to flush 10 ml through the group….which of course would have been a programmatical way to solve it on something like a solenoid group. Although that solution even for a solenoid group would have been inelegant and not protected from thermosyphon stalls.

Puristika with the fix will be as resistant as the Minima to thermosyphon stalls….and the Minima is super resistant…I doubt anyone as ever had a thermosyphon stall with one….unless they have a very obvious and bad brew circuit leak.
