Is it some sort of clamp? Something goes in the gap, and then the tapered piece with the string is pushed in to apply pressure toward the wide piece of wood? So maybe it’s for gluing (holding the two pieces together until the glue cures?) Clearly I have no idea.

It looks like a door holder but a bit too thin.
Clamp the door in and then plane the edge to fit a doorway?

I think it’s a saddle and a wedge/block. I guess you require a pair to keep the door in place, while the carpenter works on the door. It’s an old school carpentry tool.

I know what it is.

My wife ordered one from Amazon and it arrived yesterday.

She explained that my testicles are to be placed in the vice part and that the wedge bit will then be used to separate them from my body should she ever see another new grinder appear on my espresso bench.

She was even kind enough to offer me a demonstration.

I declined.

It is a door jack. As @ LMSC said, it is an ‘old school’ cramp for holding doors when planing to fit and chopping in the hinges. It does not require anything to butt against to prevent movement,once the wedge is driven in the door is held very firmly.

Elcarajillo Also shows an age using the term ‘cramp’ - like sash cramps (at least that’s what my dad and I have always called them).

Seems to be a term that’s been totally lost, everything these days is ‘clamp’.
