It is the cheapest of the 98mm single dosing titan grinders, so I would be greatly interested in a review of the p100 even if I probably will never be able to justify buying such an expensive grinder to myself.

When the world is already moving to the 01, I am somewhat behind the curve but I just found a fairly new used P100 with ssp HU burrs in what looks like as new condition selling at a decent price, and though it was more than I ever thought I would pay for a grinder, I bit the bullet and bought it. It does have the ssp hu burrs which were the ones I wanted particularly to try as I wanted more clarity and flavour separation torn light roasts than what I am getting from my ssp 64mm equipped df64 so in the end curiosity won over budget concerns…
I have just had my first latte made from what it ground. It isn’t a fair test to make a milk coffee from its grinds but i think i can already tell more flavour nuances than from my ssp lab sweet cast 64mm equipped df64. I am looking forward to exploring what it can do.
In terms of its fit and finish, it is shockingly heavy for its size and look like it was carved out of a billet of aluminium. Even the blind filter cup is massive. As a result it screams quality everywhere you see on it. I am not sure I understand lance hedrick’s criticisms of it as o have not noticed the issues he found with the one he tested on mine so far. Even the dial indicator ring seems solidly stuck in place!
The workflow is so easy and fast compared to the df64 - no rdt, turn on auto button, just drop in beans, it auto purges, then use the neat clicker a couple of times. As I tend to shake the dosing cup eith the grinds without bothering with wdt nowadays, it is ideal for my methods that the p100 comes with that aforementioned massive blind filter cup. Although it’s 58mm, I use a small funnel with my 54mm portafilter anyway so no issues.
The motor is very quiet and the grinding seems much less loud vs the df64 with the ssp. I have always hated using bellows on grinders and I am glad the p100 doesn’t require it. When I tested it with the seller, the grinder produced grinds that weighed exactly the same as the beans I fed into it. I will weigh my shots in upcoming uses of this grinder to see how the retention in actual use is but i am confident it should be minimal.
Personally I think the p100 looks better design wise than the 01. In fact among its 98mm btethren, i would say i prefer its looks to all of its competitors in that range except perhaps the titus nautilus though the look of the latter is spoiled by its massive power brick. The p100 is a very impressive looking grinder but despite its heft and size, it tends to somehow look unobtrusive- perhaps due to its silvery matte colour that somehow does not draw the eye as much.
Let’s just say I am pleased as punch with this grinder so far!

I recall you were looking to invest in a monolith max 2 or another 98mm grinder. Did you end up going ahead on it? I have to say the gap in prices from 64mm to 98mm is quite vast to the point that the ROI doesn’t seem to add up. If it weren’t for this grinder being available for sale used at a good price (for a 98mm), I wouldn’t have gotten one new.
chlorox Like you, I just think the prices for a new grinder of this type are exorbitant. It is not that I cannot afford one, more a case that to get the ‘extra’ benefit I am struggling to make myself! If a well looked after used one became available then I would more than likely buy it. I have one of those adjustable speed Solo T 64’s with the SSP burrs. It is nearly run in and I have decided to use it exclusively for the moment. I have tried it side by side with the Niche Zero and am trying to convince myself! Life has shown me, that anything is possible!
You hit the nail on the head on the costs. Sadly once price levels are set, they don’t tend to go down as new entrants want the benefit of the existing price threshold. What is needed is a disruptor to come in and upend the industry with a 98mm grinder that is appreciably cheaper but yet as good as the existing 98mm grinders, but that may not happen for a while yet because 98mm is stil a fairly small market and the 64mm market is still where the sweet spot seems to be for the home coffee enthusiast.

chlorox Because the sort of person who is willing to drop north of 3k on a new grinder is buying a badge. They will not buy second hand nor will they accept the fact that someone else could bring something to the market that is just as good and substantially better value!

- The market for high priced grinders is small, to make it as good and much cheaper means a very low profit margin
- If you will only sell a relatively small amount for minimal profit, you don’t really have a business
- The people who value and know about such grinders, want to pay more. They won’t believe the cheaper one will be as good. Thus your market shrinks even more, see above point.
- People buy a badge and buy hype. This is just normal behaviour…if it wasn’t true, marketing and influencers wouldn’t exist

Which I believe is actually overpriced…it’s received a lot of hype and self hype. I don’t know why, as I wasn’t hugely impressed at Host 23. 1K for a 64mm grinder isn’t cheap!

Not so long ago 64mm was not so common but now it seems as if everyone and his dog are making 64mm grinders and it’s now the most popular segment of the market. After a while staying there, perhaps the focus will begin to turn to the next largest burrs with 83mm and 80 mm being too close to 64mm. I would hope that I and dfk41 are not the only consumers who want a 98mm grinder but aren’t willing to pay as much as 3k aud for it! :) after all I don’t think having a Veblen-type attitude towards grinders is likely to give us what we want as grinder consumers…
On the philos, it is still cheaper than the zerno and the p64 so it’s still within premium 64mm territory. I was tempted by the idea that getting the philos would bring me very near 98mm territory but at 64mm prices, but in the end I just could not believe that it would represent a significant enough improvement over my df64 to justify the outlay, and ultimately this used p100 was not that much more expensive than a new philos so it was an obvious decision to make to choose the p100!

I just did another shot earlier and if I don’t use the clicker, the difference is about 0.2 or 0.3g with the overall result after clicker use being virtually zero retention. I didn’t see much coming out of the chute at all when the motor went into the Max rpm to purge the grinder unlike Lance hedrick’s review so I don’t think this is the results of regrinding at all unlike his supposition. I will measure again tomorrow when I use it again.
