I have one Duo I use with the 151F burrs for filter and I haven’t swapped the burrs in that grinder. But the second Duo is dedicated to espresso and that one has had quite a few burrs fitted including SSP Espresso, SSP Cast, DF DLC, Caedo Opal Glide, Gorilla Gear, Mazzer 151B, Mazzer k151H, Mazzer k151I.
To date I haven’t had to align a single burr set. I don’t put that down to luck but rather to the genius design and quality of engineering in the Duo burr chamber and burr carriers.
The shims I referred to are inserted under the rim of the top burr in the Duo to slightly lift its profile for burrs that are a tad thinner than the standard 151B burrs. I’ve ended up having a complete shim ‘ring’ laser cut from 0.5mm sheets at a local metal engineering shop. This makes it easier to shim/lift different burr sets and also has the advantage of ensuring that the burrs are lifted uniformly around their circumference.
Pic below showing a shim ring sitting on top of a burr set rim (demo purposes only, not required for most Mazzer burrs).
PS I also had another set of burr shims cut for 64mm burrs because I’m facing similar challenges with multiple burrs in the DF64V.
PPS all of this shimming madness is being done in preparation for a Burrnament in March where I’ll be blind taste comparing some 31 (and counting) 83mm and 64mm flat burrs.
