Can I chuck my hat into the ring? Right, first off, this is not an engineering review. I was lucky enough to be asked by Niche back in October, to accept the latest version of the Niche Duo. I had to sign an NDA and that was that. A couple of days later, a package turned up and I thought, I recognise that. On inspecting the packaging, it is quite clearly designed with the Zero experience in mind. The packaging has instructions printed on it for starters. Once you open the outer box, there is a strap/handle to help you lift the inner box meaning that you do not have to tip it upside down to force it out! I received a gleaming white model that arrived with espresso burrs fitted to it. A quick glance through the comprehensive handbook to make sure that there was nothing I needed to be aware of, and coffee here we come! When I dial in a new grinder, I always pull the first shot at whatever it arrives set to and take my reference from there. The third shot was spot on. 16 gms on an espresso setting takes me 16 seconds. I did not suffer from any static, the grounds were nice and fluffy. I believe the burrs originate from Mazzer (both espresso and brewed). Eventually, I thought it was time to try swapping the burrs over. Again, no help from Niche. They selected me as tester for their idiots instructions, and I feel well qualified for that role. I have made a video that I will post and it took me 70 seconds or so to swap over. You raise the lid, unscrew the silver dial, remove the screw to tighten down the top burr set, then remove it. Push down on the bottom burr set and remove. The process is then repeated with the brewed burrs (these are a different colour, blue) in reverse of course. I am deliberately keeping this summary vague! I have no idea as to how they get a big flat to be retention free. Having swapped the burrs over many times, and since access allows with ease, whenever I clean it out the retention is minimal. IIRC, the reviewer says completed “recommended…. configuration” for zeroing. We know it is the users’ choice, should they wish to.

Cuprajake funny you say that because I remember both of them did video tear downs of the Niche Zero and had completely opposing opinions on it: TWG knew what he was talking about compared to Portakeeper who wrongly thought a bigger, metal motor automatically equals better 😆

I do not categorise him as an influencer. But it makes me wonder exactly who was on the Niche list and what more we can expect. Again, TWG is a small Youtube fish which I find odd considering his obvious knowledge and expertise.

This doesn’t surprise me.

I’m sure that if he make some sounds and said “What’s up everybody? TWG here. Man made Drum sounds, roll eyes, hide behind counter and then slowly emerge” sort of thing he would have another 500k subscribers. The majority of people want entertainment, critic and opinions rather than facts it seems these days.

A very informative video indeed, but no news really for the majority of the members here. Rather a confirmation of what we already know thanks to Dave and Jake.

From the teardown you can understand the noise it makes - big burrs which have upscaled the case with lots of extra space to act like a echo chamber. It does look very nicely built with sturdy components.

Sure it will do very well once they start shipping to real Customers. I wonder how many they have presold.

I am really enjoying his videos at the moment. They’re useful, exploring things I don’t have the time or money to get into but can use to inform decisions potentially.

Given I was going to clean my zero this weekend anyway I might try the PTFE, so what it’s like.

As much as I do love my Solo / DF64, I have to admit that the mess from the bellows is starting to grate. It never really did before, but it has been 3 years now.

dutchy101 - I think that’s the strong point of the Niche: no static, no bellows, no fuzz. It just works. And if you now want a flat burr… the Duo is an option. Expensive when compared to the Zero, but might be worthwhile considering.

Saying that… I do wonder whether the new DF64v is as messy as the df64.

dutchy101 curious, I have a couple of late edition DF64s and I’m curious to learn more. Is it just the fact that its necessary to use the bellows?

Yeah - decisions, decisions. I’m still very much enjoying my Solo, but at some point, I think I will want a change. I’m over 3 years in with the Solo now, which is my 2nd grinder after a Sage Smart Grinder Pro that I had paired with my first ever machine (Sage Bambino Plus).

I think I need to try the Niche Zero or another conical grinder at some point to see whether the profile from a conical would be better for my tastes. I am not sure it would be, but only ever using a Sage SGP at home is not really the best test case..
