Can I chuck my hat into the ring? Right, first off, this is not an engineering review. I was lucky enough to be asked by Niche back in October, to accept the latest version of the Niche Duo. I had to sign an NDA and that was that. A couple of days later, a package turned up and I thought, I recognise that. On inspecting the packaging, it is quite clearly designed with the Zero experience in mind. The packaging has instructions printed on it for starters. Once you open the outer box, there is a strap/handle to help you lift the inner box meaning that you do not have to tip it upside down to force it out! I received a gleaming white model that arrived with espresso burrs fitted to it. A quick glance through the comprehensive handbook to make sure that there was nothing I needed to be aware of, and coffee here we come! When I dial in a new grinder, I always pull the first shot at whatever it arrives set to and take my reference from there. The third shot was spot on. 16 gms on an espresso setting takes me 16 seconds. I did not suffer from any static, the grounds were nice and fluffy. I believe the burrs originate from Mazzer (both espresso and brewed). Eventually, I thought it was time to try swapping the burrs over. Again, no help from Niche. They selected me as tester for their idiots instructions, and I feel well qualified for that role. I have made a video that I will post and it took me 70 seconds or so to swap over. You raise the lid, unscrew the silver dial, remove the screw to tighten down the top burr set, then remove it. Push down on the bottom burr set and remove. The process is then repeated with the brewed burrs (these are a different colour, blue) in reverse of course. I am deliberately keeping this summary vague! I have no idea as to how they get a big flat to be retention free. Having swapped the burrs over many times, and since access allows with ease, whenever I clean it out the retention is minimal. My dual burr order arrived today. Here are my first impressions.

I use a Decent espresso machine and used the adaptive profile in all cases. I pulled 3 espressos and compared one to my Niche Zero.

It appears to be less easy to dial in than the zero. I tried settings 5,6 & 7 and they pulled between 20’ and 37’. No setting produced 25’ to 32’ shots. Due to the newness of the burr?

An immediate noticeable difference in texture and flavour dynamic. Smooth, rich and more dimensions of chocolate tastable as compared to the zero, which was more muted and thinner.

A noticeable difference is obviously a good start/thing having dropped the notes.👍 I’ll try the filter burrs tomorrow.

It’s more sensitive to smaller movements of the hopper. I suggest a little bit more coffee through so it settles down, just a few Kg, and use ½ marks and then go between those if necessary. It’s actually not as finnicky as many other of the flat burr grinders and is more repeatable….remaining quite consistent from bean to bean. 1 full mark is 12 micron, the half mark is 6 micron and between the marks is 3 micron, so it’s super adjustable.

If you are still getting problems it might be a characteristic of the coffee, as there is a far tighter grind distribution than the zero, especially considering the 83mm flat burr runs almost ⅓ the speed of other 83mm grinders!

You don’t need to move the adjustment ring nearly as much with the Duo to effect the same grind size changes as with the Zero. Maybe 40% as much?

Hi. I’m new to the forum, but not new. There are too many forums….

anyway,

My duo landed today…. Naturally I want to know it has been factory set correctly and I want to hear the burrs touch.

I’ve taken the factory set dial down to minus 7 at least and still can’t hear any chirping at all. To me that is justification enough to warrant checking it.

So, I’ve started the zero process from scratch. Tightened the dial hand tight and then backed off, then slowly tightened it. I get no chirping even when it’s tight back to zero. The noise changes subtilely as it tightens, but definitely not chirping at all. The burrs seem to run less free at tight setting, stopping more quickly so there must be some resistance somewhere.

I’ve tried all the set positions and it makes no difference. I can’t get it to chirp?!

Any ideas?

Then it could be a very soft glide all round, you don’t hear a chirp, chirp, which would mean it’s exceptionally well aligned. The grinder is extremely powerful and will easily turn the burrs even if they are pressed together a little. I would be careful and return it to the factory settings. Especially as you might be grinding away at the burrs!

If you can’t remember back off and bring the burrs closer until you hear a change in the sound (don’t worry about chirping), it might be quite subtle…the grinder must be absolutely clean to do this.

I think that’s all it can be. I’ve checked the burrs and I think they have touched but in an even glide as you say.

Have backed off to where the burr runs with no noticeable change in tone or resistance and assume that is zero.

I’m kind of happy I know now.

Not yet, but I don’t want to sort of encourage it as being endorsed by Niche…it’s just my experiment. If they don’t fit, of course I will say…

Use the grinder and then if you feel you have an issue check

You should be in the 5-9 range for espresso

If not then adjust.
