Can I chuck my hat into the ring? Right, first off, this is not an engineering review. I was lucky enough to be asked by Niche back in October, to accept the latest version of the Niche Duo. I had to sign an NDA and that was that. A couple of days later, a package turned up and I thought, I recognise that. On inspecting the packaging, it is quite clearly designed with the Zero experience in mind. The packaging has instructions printed on it for starters. Once you open the outer box, there is a strap/handle to help you lift the inner box meaning that you do not have to tip it upside down to force it out! I received a gleaming white model that arrived with espresso burrs fitted to it. A quick glance through the comprehensive handbook to make sure that there was nothing I needed to be aware of, and coffee here we come! When I dial in a new grinder, I always pull the first shot at whatever it arrives set to and take my reference from there. The third shot was spot on. 16 gms on an espresso setting takes me 16 seconds. I did not suffer from any static, the grounds were nice and fluffy. I believe the burrs originate from Mazzer (both espresso and brewed). Eventually, I thought it was time to try swapping the burrs over. Again, no help from Niche. They selected me as tester for their idiots instructions, and I feel well qualified for that role. I have made a video that I will post and it took me 70 seconds or so to swap over. You raise the lid, unscrew the silver dial, remove the screw to tighten down the top burr set, then remove it. Push down on the bottom burr set and remove. The process is then repeated with the brewed burrs (these are a different colour, blue) in reverse of course. I am deliberately keeping this summary vague! I have no idea as to how they get a big flat to be retention free. Having swapped the burrs over many times, and since access allows with ease, whenever I clean it out the retention is minimal. giampiero start again I guess. Unlikely though because they go from their respective espresso machines onto a small “lazy susan” where they are spun around a few times while I look away and until I have no idea which are which. That’s when they go onto the circles and its after that step that the sampling begins, line by line. So the placing of the cups on the circle is integral to the process.

I’ll shoot a video before I start the “Burr-nament” to explain the method in the madness.

Hi folks, the Duo has arrived!

Much to my surprise I can totally taste the difference and it is much to my preference, which is fantastic.

It feels like a step up from the Zero on my coffee journey, which is what I was seeking.

I had some issues with early shots and decided i needed to recalibrate (on reflection maybe / more likely maybe not).

Anyway a good learning process followed and i am finally pulling good shots!

Where i have ended though is that after my zeroing, my espresso sweet spot is on ‘3’. This isn’t an issue but seems a little low. I am assuming the issue is that mu view of the zero point is likely incorrect.

Zeroing does seem to be an art form at first - i.e. not looking for a definite noise / chirp but a change in pitch / sound which occurs first.

I think my easy solution is to just move the marker a few notches back.

Are there any good Duo zeroing videos up yet?

Thor I am assuming the issue is that mu view of the zero point is likely incorrect.

If I were you, I would wait, play with a few more bags and see if your assumption is correct than straightaway attempting to re-zero.

Someone here did attempt this and realised it is best to leave it at that. I am not saying you shouldn’t. It is your grinder and up to you. There is a YT video from Niche.

If your sweet spot is 3, so be it! For your reference, I dialled my decaf at 2 yesterday. How old are the beans? How do you store them? 😊

On both the duo I’ve used I hand around 6

3 is really low, I never got that low even on really light stuff.

Despite instructions- I took it apart and re-zero’d.. A good learning experience!

I think I just need to play a bit more with the zero point so the sweet spot slightly higher up the scale as 3 does seem low.

I was just wondering if there were any videos with good audio showing the zeroing process - probably will help people a lot in the future.

Let’s not forget, it is a new grinder. Unless it’s been seasoned with a few KGs of beans, the grind reference might be a bit jumpy.

Example, I seasoned my espresso burrs with 3 KGs of beans before pulling a first shot. It was still all over the place. Now, It has stabilised.I am mostly pulling shots around 5-6, with some beans going as low as 4, excluding decaf.

I have put through a couple of kilos.

The first few proper shots after seasoning I seemed to be grinding tighter and tighter to stop gushing shots - I was approaching the zero point and they were still gushing through at around 15s. So i decided I may need to recalibrate.

This has worked to a point (i.e. good at 3) but it sounds like i should be between 5-10 for most espresso (the Django seemed to be in a fairly normal range on the zero so no coffee issues).

Sounds like my current zero position should actually be c 2-3.

Thor How old is your coffee and how do you store them (for daily use) please? Considering you used Zero until now, I would image it is a fresh bag.

Would you tell us how long does the shot last? Perhaps, a video of another shot might be helpful.

Up to you, if you believe it requires another re-calibration.

tompoland Sorry. Is that the Duo or Zero?

If the former, try 33 - 31 on the Duo filter burrs set for V60. These two are the grind reference I have arrived at after sifting and brewing a few cups. I will be experimenting 31 mark on the filter burrs set on the duo at least 10-12 different bags to see if this is consistent for my taste.

tompoland Please remember that 31/33 as a reference point hasn’t been established. I have just brewed a couple of bags with it. You might start with that and adjust in the 31 - 45 range depending on your taste profile.

Coffee beans are definitely good - Django coffee about 3 weeks old stored in Airscapes. Perfect shots the day before on the niche zero. Perfect shots achieved today albeit at number 3 and following what I believe to be my incorrect re-calibration.

Some more adjustments tomorrow morning and I think I will be sorted.

i did watch that niche video you posted above and I dont get the noticeably different / sudden chirp noise when i try to calibrate - I was adjusting (naughtily) with a screwdriver holding the on / off down and it was more of a gradual noise change. Think i will totally clean the burrs down and start this process from scratch.

Also wondering if putting the few kilos through without any rest influenced the first few Django coffee shots I pulled in some way as my guess now is that the factory settings were fine and i didn’t need to try and recalibrate.

Might be. I seasoned with 3 KGs on the espresso burrs set in the morning session. Gave it a full rest and seasoned a similar amount for the filter burrs set in the night. I pulled the shot only the next day. The grind setting was still all over the place for the first few shots with the decaf posing the biggest challenge. It is good and settled now.

Perhaps, you might give it a rest for a few hours and try again.

i’m exactly where you are. i couldn’t resist fiddling with it, and then had a whole load of questions.

the only noise i can detect is a slight grating as the grinder slows down. i’ve zeroed on that. if i go finer, the noise does not become any more distinct - perhaps it will with time. i’ve checked all the set points and the factory one is best for me - so i am happy with it, and happy that i know where it’s at. now i just use it.

i could perfectly understand you being at setting 3. my current coffee requires setting 4. reassuringly the niche zero on the same beans is at setting 12 which is as fine as i would normally get, so i hope that 4 on the duo is the low end of the range for me, but it is what it is.

I’ve just received my Duo but the sound doesn’t seem quite right? There’s kind of a high pitched squeal. Is this normal and just needs to be run in? Or is it something I should be concerned about?
