Can I chuck my hat into the ring? Right, first off, this is not an engineering review. I was lucky enough to be asked by Niche back in October, to accept the latest version of the Niche Duo. I had to sign an NDA and that was that. A couple of days later, a package turned up and I thought, I recognise that. On inspecting the packaging, it is quite clearly designed with the Zero experience in mind. The packaging has instructions printed on it for starters. Once you open the outer box, there is a strap/handle to help you lift the inner box meaning that you do not have to tip it upside down to force it out! I received a gleaming white model that arrived with espresso burrs fitted to it. A quick glance through the comprehensive handbook to make sure that there was nothing I needed to be aware of, and coffee here we come! When I dial in a new grinder, I always pull the first shot at whatever it arrives set to and take my reference from there. The third shot was spot on. 16 gms on an espresso setting takes me 16 seconds. I did not suffer from any static, the grounds were nice and fluffy. I believe the burrs originate from Mazzer (both espresso and brewed). Eventually, I thought it was time to try swapping the burrs over. Again, no help from Niche. They selected me as tester for their idiots instructions, and I feel well qualified for that role. I have made a video that I will post and it took me 70 seconds or so to swap over. You raise the lid, unscrew the silver dial, remove the screw to tighten down the top burr set, then remove it. Push down on the bottom burr set and remove. The process is then repeated with the brewed burrs (these are a different colour, blue) in reverse of course. I am deliberately keeping this summary vague! I have no idea as to how they get a big flat to be retention free. Having swapped the burrs over many times, and since access allows with ease, whenever I clean it out the retention is minimal. gobucks Following this was interest. I’ve tried the SSP cast and found the espresso (medium loght rissted Kenyan AA) certainly very smooth but not especially interesting. Again, just my taste buds of course. I thought they might shine more at filter. So when you get yours dialled in. I’d be very interested to know what you tried mine for filter.

I have tried the SSP Espresso burrs in 64mm mode and enjoyed them for light roasted espresso. Bright, intense and juicy.

Looking forward to trying SSP MP 64mm and SSP Brewing 84mm for filter too.

tompoland This was my first successfully dialed in for v60 - 20g in, ~330g out in 2:30. It was George Howell Montecarlos medium again. It was decent, pretty balanced, but nothing really stood out to me. I had to go all the way to 60 (for reference, I’m around 6-7 for espresso), which seems awfully coarse, so I’m hoping additional seasoning will tighten up the distribution a bit. At least there was no evidence of mud in the cup! Hansung from SSP recommends like 3-5KG for the cast burrs, and I’m probably at less than half a kilo.

gobucks - don’t know if it’s just some sort of optical illusion or want, but the grinds look really, really coarse, almost traditional French Press coarse, rock salt coarse sort of thing.

gobucks Are you using espresso burrs set ? I agree with MRS. That’s pretty coarse, given your brew time as well.

Assuming 1:2.5 is the water absorption ratio, that’s 380g water in. It’s 1:19 ratio; or, in other words, 52g of coffee powder per litre of water. That’s a weak coffee in the cup, IMO.

I normally brew at 66g/L. My grind reference on the Duo for filter burrs set are 17 and 31. My normal dry bed time for V60 is 3:30 mins to 4:00 mins mostly.

I won’t know what the corresponding number on the espresso burrs set would be. I haven’t got around dialling in on espresso burrs yet.

Edit:

Dialling on mazzer espresso burrs won’t be any use to you, btw.

To my inexperienced eyes, it does look exceptionally coarse, and it sounds like this too much water. Is that pretty much it do you think?

I’m starting out with a set of trainer wheels in the form of a Hario Switch. Before that I used a xBloom to set a benchmark. Looking forward to trying it without the trainer wheels once I get more consistency so keenly following related posts.

DavecUK I agree, it is coarser than I’d like, although I think the issue is just that the distribution isn’t very tight - all the boulders have migrated to the top, so it looks a lot worse than it is. I tried again at setting 50 (see pic), 20g in, 300g out (that’s 15:1 btw, so I think my ratio is right), took about 3 mins, brew seemed to stall just a tiny bit at the very end. As you can see in the pic, there are significantly fewer boulders, but I’m starting to get a thin ring of mud around the edges at the end of drawdown. The flavor is significantly more intense this time around.

This is with unseasoned SSP lab sweets (silver knight), I’m guessing they are producing more fines due to the increased friction on the unseasoned burrs. Hopefully the filter results will improve with more use.

Dan070857 Hey Dan! I noticed this same issue on my Niche Duo, with the screw being loose. Seems to loosen up again after a day or so worth of shots. I’m not cranking it down super tight, but using enough force to where it should stay locked in. Curious if you’ve noticed your screw loosening up again and if this is just normal behavior? Don’t want to reach out to Niche if it’s something that is expected.

Parm Hi Mate, yeah I had the same issue. I tightened the nut and it came loose again! I was going to use an Allen key to get more leverage but thought that was a bad idea as I could cause some damage. I gave it the beans with the screwdriver provided and it’s been ok since :)

I have tightened it quite a bit and feel like you shouldn’t need to force it down if the optimal function is for that bottom burr to be locked tight. Will be curious to hear if any others have had experience with this

Parm the way the grinder works is it’s locked together with the bears and bearings so the screw just keeps bottom burr down.

You do need to lock it down tight for the reasons Jake says. Think about how tight the lower burr is on many Mazzers, where people can’t get them off. You don’t need to have it that tight, but it does need firm tightening.

A tale of 2 Duos.

Posted in case others have the same issue. (In fact, it may be a non-issue, other than it being annoying).

I’ve had a wobbling sound coming out from one of the Duos.

Ironically the “uneven” wobbly sound was coming from the Duo with the original filter burrs whereas the normal “even” sound was coming from the Duo with SSP Espresso burrs.

I gave it a clean and then followed the instructions to reset the zero point. Wobbly sound gone.

No idea why. Any suggestions? (Looking at you @DavecUK 😀)

I had this today but with espresso burrs and it is set at 2, yes 2, for a light filter (dog and hat - oven heaven phuyu). I’d love to know if others are very fine for this bean.

It sounded like a tractor, and seemed to have more vibrations. I wound it back to 20 and 10 and back to 2 with no change so I opened it up, cleaned out and replaced everything. Sound was gone.

I checked zero again and it all seems fine.

For info I’m also running some darker extract decaf which needs setting 10 and the black cat las palomas which needs setting 5. So the range is probably 2-10 for me.

On a side note there was a fair bit of loose grinds above the upper burr carrier. Will these end up in the threads?
