Can I chuck my hat into the ring? Right, first off, this is not an engineering review. I was lucky enough to be asked by Niche back in October, to accept the latest version of the Niche Duo. I had to sign an NDA and that was that. A couple of days later, a package turned up and I thought, I recognise that. On inspecting the packaging, it is quite clearly designed with the Zero experience in mind. The packaging has instructions printed on it for starters. Once you open the outer box, there is a strap/handle to help you lift the inner box meaning that you do not have to tip it upside down to force it out! I received a gleaming white model that arrived with espresso burrs fitted to it. A quick glance through the comprehensive handbook to make sure that there was nothing I needed to be aware of, and coffee here we come! When I dial in a new grinder, I always pull the first shot at whatever it arrives set to and take my reference from there. The third shot was spot on. 16 gms on an espresso setting takes me 16 seconds. I did not suffer from any static, the grounds were nice and fluffy. I believe the burrs originate from Mazzer (both espresso and brewed). Eventually, I thought it was time to try swapping the burrs over. Again, no help from Niche. They selected me as tester for their idiots instructions, and I feel well qualified for that role. I have made a video that I will post and it took me 70 seconds or so to swap over. You raise the lid, unscrew the silver dial, remove the screw to tighten down the top burr set, then remove it. Push down on the bottom burr set and remove. The process is then repeated with the brewed burrs (these are a different colour, blue) in reverse of course. I am deliberately keeping this summary vague! I have no idea as to how they get a big flat to be retention free. Having swapped the burrs over many times, and since access allows with ease, whenever I clean it out the retention is minimal. What ballpark grind settings for light roasts in the Dou would you recommend?

I’m currently between 10 & 11 for medium dark roasts but I’ve a kg of the Rocco mountain beans and looking forward to trying them.

I’ve never been able to get a decent espresso with my previous grinder when I tried light roasts in the past so gave up on them

drdre89 very straightforward with all Mazzers, SSP, DF and Gorilla Gear. Can’t say the same for Ceado.

Still to try Fiorenzato and Compak but not holding my breath with them, based on how different their burr sizes are from all the others in the 64mm range.

Favorite 83mm burrs for staright espresso so far in the medium/light to medium range are the Mazzer k151H.

Hard to beat SSP Espreso (HU) for light if you like a bright vibrant espresso.

But the stock 151B burrs will keep most people quite happy for the full range of roast depths. A very smooth espresso.

(Big fan of the stock 151F for filter but bear in mind I’m newish to filter.)

But yes, all those burrs in the first line fit the Duo cartidges I have just fine. Be mindful that you may run the risk of voiding your warranty by using non stock burrs.

Here is a question for you to ponder over. The vast majority of influencers talk pure sh*te and only have their own commercial interests at heart. On the other hand, @DavecUK hates commercialism and ‘influencing’ anything in favour of receiving payment. Who designed the Duo? Who designed the concept of the Duo? Do you think it is an accident that the rpm was selected at the speed it is, anymore than the Mazzer burrs were selected? Is the burr carrier the result of very careful planning and testing? The Duo has been very carefully put together, at all stages. By all means swoop burrs if you like the ‘latest thing’ in coffee, but, there really is no need to. It just works, straight out of the box

You’ll never know until you try it out yourself, as what what you think is good might not be what Tom thinks is good. Get the Niche Duo if that’s what you want, give it a go, and then worry about buying aftermarket burrs, the caveat being what Tom just said in the last paragraph of the post above.

Ok another challenger has stepped into the ring. The DF64 Gen2 with SSP Cast burrs. I like the idea of the plasma generator for mess free grinding. (As opposed to the P64 which needs RDT)
Or do I just wait 5 years and get the DF64 Gen 8 with all the latest gadgets then.

Rocko (from Foundry) for me is on setting 10 on the Duo. But that’s subjective to the relative zero point.

drdre89 I’ve got a Gen 2 arriving next week to see what they are like but the Duo will be your premium option if you are OK with the price tag here in Aus.

(For my taste buds, not a big fan of the cast burrs. Just me or course but IMHO they lack punch/depth for espresso and for filter the stock burrs that come with the Duo are the bees knees.)

tompoland Tom, you are a million miles away on this one matey, unless you are the only person who swops burrs! My post was to try and suggest to folks, that influencers influence the latest thing, then move on to the next for financial reasons, whilst designers design. You will be well aware by now that when Dave ‘designs’ he spends hundreds of unseen hours makinng minute adjustments to the set up until he reaches a stage where he is happy. Along that journey he is treated like a schill,an influencer, out purely to make money etc etc. Why do you think that on the whole the influencers negged the Duo? There are plenty of influencers who like the Duo.

As for burr swapping, the mutually esteemed DaveC has tried SSP burrs and Niche themselves feature in full living color a Duo with SSP Titanium coated burrs, on the Duo sales page in the form of a customer testimonial. (Not that said pic necessarilyimplies an endorsement of the practice.)

drdre89 wow, he really upped his game. I meant production value is great - he looks great too. I did not pay attention closely to his videos before, because of the way he presented made me feel like he’s another Joe with superficial knowledge.

That brings another aspect of youtube influencers - unless you really know some stuffs to see if a youtuber is BS-ing or not, you are easily deceived by the production value. if a video looks great and the presenter is eloquent, you can be tricked into thinking they know their stuffs.

drdre89 thanks and yes saw that a while back, it was very interesting. Agree 100% that it produces a very well balanced espresso but so do other burrs like the Itamill or the stock 151B burrs in the Duo. But in terms of one burr to do both espresso and filter, it’s probably as good as you are going to get, or the Lagom Mizzen.
