Can I chuck my hat into the ring? Right, first off, this is not an engineering review. I was lucky enough to be asked by Niche back in October, to accept the latest version of the Niche Duo. I had to sign an NDA and that was that. A couple of days later, a package turned up and I thought, I recognise that. On inspecting the packaging, it is quite clearly designed with the Zero experience in mind. The packaging has instructions printed on it for starters. Once you open the outer box, there is a strap/handle to help you lift the inner box meaning that you do not have to tip it upside down to force it out! I received a gleaming white model that arrived with espresso burrs fitted to it. A quick glance through the comprehensive handbook to make sure that there was nothing I needed to be aware of, and coffee here we come! When I dial in a new grinder, I always pull the first shot at whatever it arrives set to and take my reference from there. The third shot was spot on. 16 gms on an espresso setting takes me 16 seconds. I did not suffer from any static, the grounds were nice and fluffy. I believe the burrs originate from Mazzer (both espresso and brewed). Eventually, I thought it was time to try swapping the burrs over. Again, no help from Niche. They selected me as tester for their idiots instructions, and I feel well qualified for that role. I have made a video that I will post and it took me 70 seconds or so to swap over. You raise the lid, unscrew the silver dial, remove the screw to tighten down the top burr set, then remove it. Push down on the bottom burr set and remove. The process is then repeated with the brewed burrs (these are a different colour, blue) in reverse of course. I am deliberately keeping this summary vague! I have no idea as to how they get a big flat to be retention free. Having swapped the burrs over many times, and since access allows with ease, whenever I clean it out the retention is minimal. MediumRoastSteam I swap the burrs out daily. I swap the night before for my morning filter. Then after the filter I swap over to espresso burrs.

It works well for me.

DavecUK It won’t make drip or filter any worse than all the other grinders with espresso burrs, so you should enjoy it.

I deleted a few lines that would have made my “Not expecting anything spectacular” make more sense.

My wife purchased the coffee from a grocery store. I was surprised to find a date on the bag.

The coffee is as expected, bad. 10 years ago, it was easy for my wife and I to find fresh coffee. Now we have 30 varieties of stale coffee to choose from.

Using looks of grind size to compare to my existing grinder (Ode V1) was not possible. The duo is much more consistent on size.

Edit: 4.3 on the Ode was too sour. Tried to match 4.0 of the Ode. Stopped at 65 on the duo, still finer than the Ode…. Will try 60 tomorrow)

Loonster Have I missed something here, perhaps earlier in the thread? Are you not able to purchase coffee direct from roasters online and have it sent out? Perhaps you live out in the sticks and if so I apol;ogise in advance!

dfk41 I’m going to have to do that. Analysis Paralysis has been holding me back. So many roasters with so many varieties. Then add in shipping and minimal order size.

I miss the days where I could go to a local roaster and fill my own bag with whatever I wanted. Sure it would get stale in the dispenser faster than bags, but turnover was so high it wasn’t a problem. Now when I go to the same roaster, the coffee in the bags was roasted over a month ago. To get fresh coffee now, you need to order ahead of time and pickup.

Loonster Well, if you can give us an idea of where you live and an example of the sorts of roasts you enjoy, maybe the good folks on here can chip in with some suggestions. Sounds quite an easy nut to crack!

As a starter for ten, I would highly recommend Wogan Coffee here in Bristol. They always have a great selection of freshly-roasted coffee, and are a friendly bunch.

@tompoland where can I purchase the k151h burrs in Australia? … seems to be only sold in the Mazzer Major VP only I can find.

Would like to see how it compares to the 151b in my Niche Duo once I get a replacement for the bottom screw issue.

drdre89 a bit tricky. Bought online from https://www.italiankitchenaids.com/ and due to regional sales licences I had it shipped to my brother in law in Germany and then shipped from there to Australia. They were incredibly hard to find.

I had a bit of time to spend using the Duo and it definitely lives up to my expectations. Always loved the workflow and it’s still as good as I remembered with the zero . There’s a bit of static, maybe as I grind straight to the portafilter but not extortionate. I remember this settled a lot with the zero after good few kilos ground.

Comparing to df83 I couldn’t say the coffee is better or worse but might be just my taste buds. I loved the coffee from the df and it’s super tasty from the duo. With this being the case the Duo is staying and DF is going.

Done two mods to the duo.
Added a pointer to so I can better see the grind setting I’m on (my grinder sits next to the wall which makes near impossible to read it without it).
Added an anti popcorn mod to the lid so I don’t have to manually remove it every time.

Anyone else getting some fines in the cup?

I’m using monsoon Malabar beans which were roasted back in August 22nd, I’ve never had fines with espresso ever before, just wondering if it’s the grinder or more likely my porta filter’s filter which is a 14g Elektra filter which is quite old now as the machine is a 2007 model.

Twotone2 / fines is part of espresso. Without fines there’s no resistance in the puck, and there would not be a texture to the shot.

Thanks however I’m talking about ‘fines’ in the cup, seems funny but I’ve never ever had fines in the cup before when making espresso however I have had fines plenty of time when making filter pre Duo.

To be clear there’s not many but it is noticeable and a bit unpleasant looking (floating) in americano with a dash of milk, I’d certainly send the coffee back if had similar in cafe or restaurant.

Twotone2 - if you have another grinder and you can assert it happens with one but not the other, then you know what’s causing it.

I remember seeing a picture of your setup, I think, and the whole thing was full of coffee dust.

Could it be the fines are just ending up in your cup without you realising it?

No it’s not coffee dust, my set up has moved a wee bit the grinder is now on the opposite side from the espresso machine, actually I cleaned everything up the other day as we were going away for a couple of days anyway the set up is relatively clean now.

I only have a hand grinder now the other commercial grinder has been moved on.

I’ve a few other portafilter baskets so I’ll try those but the problem I have is that the group head is really only designed for 7 & 14 gram baskets although I can use a 17g basket in the Elektra PF, I also have a 20g naked PF that I can use too.

BTW, I’ve only noticed the fines in the cup with the MM beans and only opened the bag last week, there’s also quite a bit of static with those beans.

Twotone2 - understood. Yeah, I have no idea, sorry. If the fines are generated by the grinder and those are not being “filtered” by the basket, then maybe consider buying a basket with smaller holes, such as a VST or IMS e&b (there are others).
