MediumRoastSteam DavecUK The real elephant in the room….there is no one burr to rule them all. One can come close…but always it will be better at one or t’other.
I’d go a level further and say the same for different types of roasting profiles/origin etc, even for the same preparation method (e.g.: espresso)
So one might say that burr A is better for coffee 1, and burr B better for coffee 2. And maybe a conical burr C is better for coffee 3.
So yeah, no one burr to rule them all.
Quoting myself a few days later on this. I’m currently drinking a coffee that, in all honesty, I’m not enjoying in the Niche Duo. So I thought I’d give it a go on the Niche Zero, which happens to sit to the left of the Duo.
I tell you something… That particular coffee, on the Zero, is a lot better. Smooth, silky, balanced. On the Duo is harsher, somewhat bitter.
Goes to show that it’s not all about flat vs conical and which one is better. And it is not only about the burr - but about speed, burr profile, basket. etc. etc. But for me, as I cannot change the other variables, just changing from one grinder to the other made quite a difference. And it’s also interesting that it’s not always the case for all coffees. I’ve tried other coffees where I can barely tell the difference in taste between the Zero and the Duo. But for this particular coffee - It’s night and day, and, for this particular coffee… The Niche Zero wins.
