I use the timer more as a useful starting point than an accurate doser and it works well. 99% of the time I’m making two coffees so what I do is run the timer and grind into a dosing cup, pulse as necessary to top up. Then I’ll pour that into the PF (using a funnel) and grind the second shot into the dosing cup again while I’m levelling/tamping.
By the time I’m locking in the PF the second dose is ground, I’ll pull the first shot then drop the second dose straight in.
This is why a timer is useful. With the SJ I couldn’t be prepping the first shot as it didn’t have a timer.
I’m a big proponent of OD grinding as I’ve made clear in my posts. I think people overlook them because of the ultra-freshness argument and popularity of single dosing but you’re still getting a really solid, big flat burr grinder that’s fast, and can prep multiple shots really quickly.
Obviously switching coffees and grind types daily is not handled well by OD grinders so if that’s every likely to be a consideration then single dosing is the way to go.
Nothing else comes to mind worth noting, just that they really aren’t designed to single dose. I still find it really odd when often you’ll see some of the first reviews/tests of OD grinders like ‘can they single dose, what’s the retention like?’ But I guess that’s just because single dosing is so popular.
