phil28 I am down for a 064s but currently have 2 hand grinders a c40 with redclix and a Mazzer Omega… keeps me strong !

phil28 Just wonder what grinders you guys have?

A Super Jolly which I’ve recently put in the cupboard in favour of a Mahlkönig x54. I don’t single dose for espresso so they’re both solid, enjoyable on-demand grinders.

Could be a good time to test an on-demand ex commercial flat burr while you wait for the Timemore and then if you prefer the workflow/output of the Timemore you could sell the other.

A used Mazzer Mini E will set you back about £200 and a Super Jolly E about £300, both great bang for the buck.

Alternatively a conical hand grinder to have the option alongside the Timemore.

My major is for sale haha

What’s the exchange retention on those? Do you purge before a session? If so, by how much?

Whilst the grind path on the SJ isn’t huge, there’s an anti-clumping screen which causes a few grams to get stuck in the chute. Technically you can remove it and brush it out pretty easily but I just purge about a seconds worth so probably 2-3g on the first shot of the day.

I’d imagine it’s slightly more on the x54 as it uses the same flapper thing used on the higher end MK’s. I probably only purge 3G or so on that though.

To be totally honest I’ve gone without the purge before and the difference in taste isn’t really all that noticeable. The simplicity of just having beans in the hopper and hitting the timer button makes up for any retention.

This is so true. I do miss the flow of an on-demand grinder. Providing the timer is accurate enough and used as intended, the simplicity of putting your portafilter underneath the grinder, hitting a button and 6s or so later there’s a nice mound of grounds on the basket without any mess is great.

Glad you enjoy it. And that’s what really matters. 👍

Thanks yes I’m really happy with it.

The timer is actually really accurate on the x54, within 0.2g each time, I just make sure to keep the hopper topped to a similar level.

Quick question - any suggestions on a skinny scale to use under the micra ? Not sure the timemore black will fit with a cup. (I could buy a acacia lunar but thats alotta money 😂)

I’ve had the Felicita Arc for a couple of years, really great but total overkill for me. Bought it for the auto tare and timer but now just use the scale functionality.

Tbh some of the cheaper scales on Amazon are fine, and very low profile.

Ernie1 Isn’t the Arc seemingly the Acacia software in a different case ?

            MattH

It may well be yes. It’s got a lot of functionality I don’t use. I like that it’s rechargeable though and I’ve travelled with it on occasion also to use with pourover.

It’s also metal and feels very robust.

More questions… if buying a tamper for the LMM do I go for a 58mm or 58.55 ?

Very tempted by the tampers @StevenG91 has listed in the classifieds..

MattH I don’t know the la marzocco baskets but the 58.55 fits vst, Pullman and IMS

StevenG91 I have just messaged you on Instagram in case you are wondering who that nutter is :)

I think it was the other thread where the lack of a shot clock was mentioned. Now I also thought it was something the LM app would do but I could not find it mentioned (or it was a future release)

Saw this on insta - I wonder if its now available ?

Not sure if the Micra ships with the same steel tamper as the Mini but it’s really great. 58mm with a convex base.

I found 58.5 doesn’t fit properly. The GS3 used to ship with a 57mm but I’d guess that was when lower doses were more common and the tamper needed to fit further into the basket.

This is the LM one I have. The only issue is that it’s not hugely ergonomic in the hand, I’ve tried to remove the base but no luck.

This is strange. I used to have a 58.5mm tamper and use LM Strada baskets (apparently same as VST). Fitted perfectly.

                    MediumRoastSteam

That is weird as I’m pretty sure the Strada baskets are practically the same as the Linea ones, the latter just doesn’t get the certificate. But both made by VST.

It might’ve been difference basket volumes, the ones I have narrow as they go down the side so it depends on dose/density. A 58.5 will comfortably fit, but not be able to tamp as deep as a 58.

Ernie1 - ok. That makes sense. But if you dose 18g of coffee in those baskets (or whatever they are designed for, I.e.: 22g, 20g) sure a 58.5mm fits perfectly fine? As in, unless you put so little coffee into the basket, then you might have a problem.
