Made a couple of flat whites for my family with the left over Kenyan Guama. They liked it. It was a light roast and ground at 13 on the Duo.

Great coffee as an espresso. It really shines on the Lever. It tastes like a very sweet nectarine juice. 😊

I usually drink medium/light-medium roasts. And use a Lelit Elizabeth with 18g VST basket. Can’t remember the last time I moved the dial above 4. And most of the times it’s around 2. Which is alright for 18g shots, but cannot really do 16g shots as I can’t grind finer. Have re-zeroed without any change. Niche told me, I need to move the zero point 5 marks lower, without any explanation, but haven’t done that.

oddbean Am sure you have zeroed property. The cleanliness of the burrs set make a difference. Niche also told me that if the burrs are cleaned and zeroed properly, a fully-tightened hopper would be about -20.

The above coffee from SS is pretty light and am grinding at 13.

As sure as I can be, I tried a few times, and always cleaned the burrs and everything. Used to move the dial while grinder was on, so zeroed right when I could here the slightest sound, and not when the sound was harsh. Just did not want to damage anything. Wondering they can try to re-zero it for me.

They also told me the use on the 4 mark for espresso. Which doesn’t mean much without knowing the machine, basket and amount at least. Did ask though, without a response.

What are the odds? 3rd time since acquisition. I still wonder how a single bean, let alone 2, gets there!

Bottomline, we are glad we got the Duo with both burrs sets.

During testing this happened a few times, of course I did literally 100s and 100s of shots, I felt exactly the same.

The Mazzer filter specific burr set on the Duo is really really good. Adds a marked sweetness to the filter coffee.

I drink filter once or twice per week, morning or afternoon and I will always swap the burrs due to the improvement in flavour over espresso burrs. This is true of any espresso burr as the characteristics needed to make espresso, are different to those needed for filter.

All Espresso burrs will do filter of similar quality, but you can’t beat a filter specific burr and I even put the Mazzer filter burr up against the SSP filter burr and I considered the Mazzer burr better. In blind taste tests, I can usually identify the Mazzer burr 100% of the time.

Likewise, except it stays there for a few days. The pattern is more like Saturday to Tuesday espresso burrs set and filter burrs Wednesday to Friday. 😊

I don’t like the filter coffee from espresso burrs set.

The Foundry’s Jairo Arcila and Kenyan Karimikui pulled some great espresso and a lovely flat white. Rave’s Guatemala La Esperanza Nº 262 was also nice to drink as a long black and as a nutty flat white. All were pulled at 94C/100C.

Darkwoods’s Colombia - Finca Villa Betulia - Yirgacheffe (Natural Anaerobic) as an espresso for me and as a flat white for my family were right up my street.

Pulled at 94/100. The floral aroma and sweet lemon taste were spot on.

This Darkwood Panama Geisha made a great espresso. Full bodied, creamy and fruity acidity which I can liken it to tropical fruits like ripe mango. The floral aroma is nice too. Brewed at 94c/100C grinding at 13.5 on the Duo. I think I can tighten the grind by 0.5 mark on the Duo.

I have had two average coffee which were roasted about 3 weeks before the order date. I no longer bother about the roast date as long as it is not more than 3 weeks old. These weren’t cheap either.

Anyways, it is great to open a bag from Darkwoods. A great coffee full of aromas and flavours as per the bag. It was very sweet and juicy - like drinking a fruit juice.

I loved this Ethiopian as espresso. Am sure, this will make a lovely filter.

LMSC - agree! Darkwoods (despite buying 250g bags from them and having a Best Before date - 6 months added to roast date it seems) rather than a roast date, it’s becoming one of my go to roaster. I had a kilogram of the one you mentioned and it’s superb. Funny enough, if you buy 1kg bags, they do have a roast date… go figure.

Edit: I just realised that the one I bought a while back - was also Ethiopian, and was from Ardent/Sidama station, and a natural. But it wasn’t one of the “fancy” ones.

Edit: I just checked my order… and it read: “ Ethiopia - Ardent Coffee - Sidama Dembi (Natural Anaerobic)” - this was 2.5 months ago. I paid £41.85 for 1,000g. It’s now selling (if it’s the same) for £44.85 for 500g - approx. £88 for 1,000g. 😱🫢

Gone stale already.

This was roasted on the 29th Nov, a week+ when it got delivered. I prefer resting for 2 at least weeks before opening the bag.

This is 500g. I have vac-ed and stored about 200g in a dark cup board, drinking the 300g, split into 2 shots canisters. These also stay in the same dark cupboard. I found turbo shots gave me the best cup (20s for 1:2.5). Alas, this beans have already gone stale as it is just pouring to finish 1:3 in about 15-16s, despite tightening the grind by 4 full marks on the Duo. The coffee isn’t good either - a meh cup.

I am thinking what’s in store for the remaining 200g. Moral of the story, I will think twice before buying 500g, which I seldom purchase. 😀

A complex coffee as expected. It just fared average as a long black and also as an espresso for me. 😊

Edit:

Flat white was decent, although the strength and the taste were a little flatter dosing 17.5g and pulling at 1:2.5 for 30s at 5.5 mark on the Duo.
