I had a NZ with my DE1 and it worked very well. It’s a great grinder and produced some delicious coffee. If I could make a suggestion, I find medium-dark Brazillian roasts respond very well to the ‘80’s espresso’ profile. I’ve had some real chocolate bombs with my Niche with that profile.

I’d also recommend a Philos if you fancied a change. The NZ is excellent at darker roasts, however I found as I moved towards lighter beans I appreciated the more unimodal (ie fewer fines) distribution of a flat as it gives less astringency. The downside is there is less mouthfeel and viscosity to shots, but both are delicious in their own way.

Have ordered a Lagom casa. Found a retailer has it in stock and they will handle all import duty and taxes for me. I will miss the robustness and reliability of NZ but something new for light beans will be great.

Next weekend the fun will begin

How you getting on with the decent?

Cuprajake getting better results both espresso and milk frothing. But not much time to play with, I roasted some Colombia decaf yesterday and that is for next weekend, so I am not really experimenting much. Mostly just make sure I get reasonable good shots in terms of time/flow. Taste pleasantly but lacking a bit of “out of this world” tastes, which might be explained that my light roasted beans are held back by NZ.
But appreciate it more as the noise is acceptable most of the time and I am getting better and better results with steaming milk. More smooth, silky milk. Latte art still a no go :D

it seems I need to grind finer to reach the higher pressure target at the end?

stumped upon this today, and when they put the Meraki and Oracle Touch side by side, I realize how smart/forward thinking John and his team at decent are. The screen will likely die, one of the first. For things like Oracle or Meraki, if those die, and you’re out of warranty, you’re out of luck - the cost of repairing them will be, hard to swallow. For decent? Just buy another cheap Android tablet! You can also upgrade every time. Bigger, better screen? Yes. Take it away? Sure!
Did not really think about it, but then it comes clear about how much thought they put into maintainability and repairability

that the low contact faster shot, imo the lever shots are for the more traditional beans

thats why my emma profile starts to 3bar then hits high pressure lol, by the time its ramped up it can be done with a light roast

I think it’s a Guatemala, light roasted by me. I’m using E&B Lab 18-20gr basket. do not like the look of the default basket one …

Cuprajake I realize I can order pullman basket from squaremilecoffee shipping to my address quite cheap, taxes and duty taken care of. Intriguing. What other baskets did you use?

ive had a few,

normecore, pullman, e&b , dont like vst or the stock decent basket, have a few imc comp and rounded base baskets then theres another off ebay the name escapes me, aussie cmpany make portafilters, that was horrible to use,

ive also had wafo high extraction but with the bianca, for the money the pullmans a good basket

Hey @cuprajake, silly question, but how do you find the Pullman basket compares with the stock Decent basket? I quite like the stock basket, but am always keen to squeeze out some more performance with minimal outlay!

JammyDodger if you compare the look then you can see precision baskets like IMS or E&B Lab (which is made by IMS also) look much better - the bottom looks smooth and uniform. Default basket looks rough to me. Nothing about the actual shot quality, but it shows craftmanship

As far as I am aware Decent baskets are made by IMS or VST (I can’t recall which but it is one of these two manufacturers) as a white label product, so there shouldn’t be a huge (if any) difference between the two.

the default basket looks exactly like this, with the circle rings inside. the holes themselves are fine, those marked rings bug me a bit - I prefer a smooth surface :D
thanks for letting me know, then I don’t have to look for VST baskets anymore. They are crazily expensive in EU (like 50 GBP converted), but I want to know the fuzz. I own one now
