I’ve not watched the video, but Filter 2.0 is what everyone uses in the Decent Discord. I’d highly recommend joining that server as it has a large amount of useful discussion.

I have the basket you speak of. It doesn’t do a great job. It’s ok but v60 is better. Furthermore filter 2.0 is better and ICBINF (I can’t believe it’s not filter) is worth a go too as per the previous post there’s plenty of support on the forums. I find the discord server the best for my needs.

So direct use of a v60 with say a DripAssist is as good or better than the Decent with their basket, then. Ok.

I might then use the v60 and a DripAssist, plus your suggested profile (tweaked to taste) to get automation and easily repeatable results. Thoughs?

I use filter 2.1 and find it to be pretty good, certainly better than my pour-over efforts with a V60. It’s pretty sensitive to puck prep and tamp pressure however, so not one for me to do first thing in the morning. I’m very interested in the upcoming filter basket from Rao, which looks to be just as good as a properly-made V60 and allows you to just dump the coffee in and let the DE1 take care of the water side of things automatically. Obvious caveat that it hasn’t gone into full production yet and the only reviews are from the guy manufacturing them and a selection of YouTubers, who are obviously out for clicks.

So, large grain of salt noted, but I’m still up for getting one. I’ll post any thoughts here once it arrives.

Thanks for the information, @JammyDodger . I have a Niche Zero. Assuming that you have one, what approximate grind setting works for this profile, subject to variation between individual grinders? What basket size and dose do you use? What about brew ratio? Thanks.

It’s so hard to give an answer as it depends so much on the coffee you’re using. For my cup this afternoon, I had a light-roasted Colombian at a grind setting of around 22 on my Niche. It’s very likely to be calibrated differently to yours so it’s much better to have a play around and be guided by taste.

An off the wall thought. For Decent owners, why not just use a regular but empty basket in a PTF, to flow water onto a Hario DripAssist sitting on a V60 cone and filter. Or just direct from the dispersion screen to the DripAssist (no PTF basket). Then set up a profile that will pour water (including initial pre-infusion) at the timing, pace and flow rate desired. With the scale linked to the Decent, of course. The “shot” could set up to stop at a set weight, or a volume (in which case no need to link the scale).

Great for the first morning coffee! Turn on Decent, grind coffee, setup the v60, select the v60 profile and hit pour. Then make toast while your v60 coffee is pouring. 🥱☕

The additional benefit would be a consistently well made v60.

Consistency in pour over brewing isn’t the challenge - stick to the same brew weights & pour timing and you’ll achieve consistency. Whether that is excellent or not depends on the dial in. Consistent excellence would require consistently excellent sourcing & roasting of the coffee.

I don’t have a Decent, but brewing regularly with the Drip Assist I have found that I only need to pour in the centre section in the very early stages (30-40% of brew water for V60) to adequately wet & penetrate the bed. I then only pour in the outer ring for the rest of the brew to limit agitation. I don’t see how you would do that with the Decent?

Also be aware of the height added by the 02 Drip Assist - 02 cone & Drip Assist stand 14cm tall, plus cup/server. Height looked pretty tight in the Decent video you linked.

Sure do like the idea of the v60 brew profile automation we could get with the Decent. It would be great in the sleepy early AM; push a button and done!

Good point re height. I can however just slide remove the drip tray and my scale, cup, V60 and Drip Assist would nicely sit on the counter. Will need to measure. A low height cup will help.

My first coffee each morning is a pour over using a Hario Switch and a gooseneck kettle.

This morning I tried the Filter 2.0 Decent basket and the Filter 2.1 preset on the DE1 but didn’t get a coffee that was even close to the brightness and fruitiness that I normally get. Just a one off of course so I’ll have another go tomorrow.
