Confession #1: I was never a big fan of the original DF64 but the V won me over, big time. Confession #2: I had similar feelings about the DF83. I wanted to like it. I tried to like it (I bought two of them and had a 3rd unit sent to me by a very supportive Australian importer, Frank A at Coffee Tech). I've been expecting a DF83V for some time now. Little birdies were saying December. It may be a little later than that but here's a sneak peak. No details yet but it's clear that they have gone back to the drawing board on this one. @"MediumRoastSteam"#p56989 that is funny. I never really got passed the problem of misthreading the collar. Initially I thought it was simply an issue with one grinder. But after misthreading three of them I decided to give them a miss altogether. I had the same issue with 2 out of 4 DF64s (gen 1). Remember too this was pre-Duo. I wanted a pair of 83mm flats for side by side testing. Aluminium of aluminium as best I could tell. And I'm probably not the most subtle of users.

Interesting change of design, like many I was just expecting a larger 64v! Small point but feel like these would be a lot better with analogue rpm dials, still they seem to do the job fine.

A vertical EK type grinder at 83mm to minimise retention with variable rpm going down as low as 300 and which can achieve zero retention without using bellows (my greatest peeve about the df64)? If they can keep the price to the same range as how the df64v differs from the df64 and with ssp burrs added, where do I sign up?!

This could be what the sculptor failed to become with its proprietary size and with its burrs being unsuited for light roasts clarity forward beans. Personally a similar df98v would be perfect but this would be a great way to tide over till then.

Does this have the plasma generator to reduce static without rdt?

To be honest I always think the DF grinders are somewhat off in design & finish. When I look at the Timemore Sculptor at least it has some feeling of refined design. The DF83v feels more of a prototype than a finished product. Sure performance/price is probably hard to beat, but it does not spark the “oh I have to have this” feeling to me

More in-depth video including the plasma generator and declumper. Looks good to me, and seems pretty quiet at 300RPM. I’m biased at this point as I haven’t had an expresso machine for 8 months, so you could show me grounds made with cold water, hammer and a dishcloth and I’d salivate ;-)

Cuprajake watching on a phone and rubbish eyes - can’t see it, not too worried. At £570 room can consider swapping for a generic switch, swapping burrs later, or just not looking down ;-)

Doesn’t look too ugly to me. Whereas the old pointer/collar on the df83 was unpleasant to look at and unavoidable. I’m expected multiple mods over time. First one I’m hoping for is a 54mm stand for portafilter - presumably some sort of dodgy 3d print initially…

I’m not that worried about a power switch ;-) but after a year I’ll be surprised if there isn’t a generic one that can be swapped in 10 mins.

I’d also be surprised if the switch isn’t different on the production model, or doesn’t change in the future…

More of a concern will be retention, how well aligned the burrs are etc. My suspicion is that it’s a well engineered platform designed with burr swapping and alignment in mind. Looked pretty easy from the video…

I am probably late to the game as usual on this thread but I question the value of this grinder from the point of view, that you are paying a substantial whack of money out then expecting to spend more. I presume the burrs are aftermarket specials. The Niche Duo came with industry recognised Mazzer burrs that the designers deemed quite fit for purpose without the need to change. What this grinder is saying is that in order to get ‘better’ coffee you will need to spend more by replacing the burrs with very expensive atom splitting burr sets, so loved by many.

You could make infinite cups of coffee using the stock burrs or whatever burrs you fancy, knowing that so many would be happy and so many would only be happy if they thought the burrs were the latest things…..in other words what is one mans meat is another mans poison and all based on opinion

Could end up regretting, but reckon it’ll be pretty decent for the price, and maybe apart from that power switch not particularly ugly IMHO… like I mentioned mostly just glad to be getting my EVO back after a long forced break!
