Just happened upon this, looks nice at least! @tompoland wondering if you’ll review it vs the staresso?! 15% off at the moment too

Hey probably not for a while.

In the meantime, the short version is that I like it.

My previous travel kits were either too big (Flair 58, Niche Zero) or too faffy (9barista - great little device but too much faff when travelling) but the Staresso fits the sweet spot of size and simplicity.

The compromise with zero-boiler devices like the Staresso or a non-electic Flair, is that you need to get the water chamber up to approximately the right temperature (93 degrees for my beans) so the chamber needs a couple of lots of boiling water run through it and then you fill it and complete the pour as swiftly as possible. So there is a bit of faff in that but given that it’s just for that early morning shot of espresso before you venture forth out of your Airbnb, it serves the purpose very well.

I recommend the Staresso as a travel espresso device but not for in home daily use.

tompoland yeah I bought a staresso after seeing your review. I like the coffee I get from it on the go but it is a lot of faff as you detail above! I used it over the Xmas at my parents and was happy I did as the coffee was good but all that faffing with water preheating etc!!

Less faff with the Flair 58 I had but a lot more weight/size to lug around.

    5 days later

JHCCoffee PicoPresso, which is well built but too much faff.

That’s what I found too. Nice espresso but too much faff for too little espresso. Still, it was an interesting stepping stone and at the time a bit of fun.

@JHCCoffee and 53mm tamper as the basket is that size, if you contact them via the online chat they should sort you out if you’ve already ordered

JahLaza and 53mm tamper as the basket is that size, if you contact them via the online chat

I emailed several times and finally got in communication with a fellow named Jeff. The good news: The two non-pressurized baskets made it into the order before it shipped. The frustrating news: they didn’t manage to hold the order in order to allow me to add a 53mm tamper to it. They suggest I place a new order and will refund the shipping cost. Sounds like abit of a hassle with a potential need to follow up on the shipping cost refund.

@JahLaza @tompoland I can buy the tamper locally. It’s 53mm, right? Does the base need to be any specific thickness? Or pattern? Or curve (convex or concave)? Is the tamper they sell particularly light, normal or heavy weight? Do you like theirs or should I buy aftermarket?

JHCCoffee yes, it’s a 53mm tamper. If you can source one locally then fine, but if they’re offering to ship it free I would go with that personally (unless of course it’s much more expensive than you can source locally, but it’s not that expensive as far as I can remember). It’s a flat base, has concentric rings which leave the same on top of the puck, I did read somewhere that someone thought that helped with distribution, but, I’m not qualified to validate such a claim!! It looks nice however (before you ruin it by putting into the device and ruining your lovely design with water!!!) it weighs 301.7 grams in total and here’s a couple pictures

            JahLaza yes, it’s a 53mm tamper.

Thanks for taking the time to provide a fully descriptive post, JahLaza. It’s appreciated! I ordered the tamper, which is being shipped ASAP, without additional shipping cost.

Now I will just need to be patient, as the Staresso and tamper order crawls through the mail to eventually land in Canada and then clear customs and make its way to my house.

              My what?

Decent De1pro v1.45 - Niche Duo - Niche Zero - Decent is the best machine ever made -

JHCCoffee @Cuprajake I see that you are selling your Staresso. If I might be so bold as to ask why….

Sorry. My error. I meant @prezes . He says he has two and is selling one.
