I have resurrected this thread. Why? Once again I have itchy feet of course. It is only the conical version that interests me. I am down to one grinder (NZ) therefore have the perfect excuse, wife wise! I just wondered if there were any new forum owners of the current version (MC6)

Was I the only person to be put off by the seller opening up the fairly new grinder?

There is a reason why Denis slaps a big yellow warning sticker on his grinders saying “Do not disassemble”.

My buddy has the MC6, I own a MC5 with first gen shirikones and while I feel I’m all set with my setup as I’m more a set and forget person, the MC6 with current gen shurikones does offer more versatility with roast levels and rpm. The ability to expand coffee types and profiles out of the 6 is super fun. I don’t notice a difference in body but that’s dependant on those variables anyway

@dfk41 I think you should just take one for the team and order one 😂. From what I’ve read they seem to keep their value well for a resale so if for some reason you hate it you won’t lose out too much if you decide it’s not for you.

I always laugh at the endgame setup debates but I find it hard to make any case that the kafatek grinders are anything other than serious end game products.

The mc6 is definitely an end game grinder but I find the bellows off putting and not befitting a titan grinder, personally speaking. This antipathy to bellows is mostly born from a couple of years of needing to use bellows on the df64.

Correct, the bellows in the picture of the Monolith for sale is not a Mr. Puff. It is an aftermarket item produced by a Kafatek forum member that allows you to dose beans through the bellows.

What’s static like on these grinders? The inclusion of bellows and RDT in that list suggests it’s a factor.

i dont have a MC6 (yet?)

I do have a weber key and a Kafatek flat max 2 - early 2024 version

Flat Max:

no rdt - grind - press the (cheap and nasty bellows craig included with the sale!) 2 or 3 times. hit the thwacher 2 or 3 times - transfer to portafilter - Tamp.

Weber Key with coated 83mm mazzer burrs:

1 spray of mist from weber rdt bottle - mix (shake) well - grind - transfer to portafilter - WDT using a very complicated pattern i have to follow precisely to keep OCD in check (Not really unless your name begins with L ) -Tamp.

with the KEY - RDT is ESSENTIAL. But night / day, black / white, good / bad, with / without it. Id given up on it until i realised the difference 1 x mist sprat makes.

Mazzer Philos:

no RDT no WDT no OCD no VAT - grind - transfer - tamp :-) edit sorry 2 or 3 flicks of the thwacker at end of grind

Craig Lyn HG-1 prime. Some days would benefit from a very light RDT .

Yeah I mean static is somewhat unavoidable, even though yes the Philos does a very good job via the magnetised cup and ‘knocker’.

I just remember seeing some criticism of the Philos using a knocker on a £1000 grinder so by the same logic, bellows on a £2500 grinder does seem somewhat out of character.

I guess it’s impossible to account for all bean types, in all atmospheres though so as you say, probably just covering bases.

Reminds me of a time when my wife was asking “what are those buttons you fiddle with whilst driving, i never need to use them?”

(I use the speed limiter everywhere and to me its essential to keep zero points on driving licence - others would say im idle!)

That’s why I appreciate my p100 so much. I don’t need bellows nor rdt with it to get zero retention. And even at speed 3 or 4 it is not so loud and it is superfast.
