do people know/ have tried other 64mm burr options in the t64? I was looking at the Mazzer SJ or MM ones? Cheers

dang2484 haven’t tried Mazzers in it as I don’t have a pair lying around but other SSPs will work. Mazzers didn’t fit in the DF64 series grinders because of a slightly smaller inner burr diameter. However Italmill does clones of the Mazzer espresso burrs that have a more standard fit, and from experience there’s nothing much between the two if you like that style of traditional espresso.

FadedFrontiers nice one thank you 👍 I’ll have a look for some Italmill burrs as well. I tried some Lebrew hyper burrs but didn’t fit unfortunately so looking for an alternative before giving in and moving to the Duo!!

dang2484 by the look of it the SSP MP will be closest to the LB Hyperburrs, just depends what your preferences are. I had the SSP brew burrs and they could do espresso but they are very different from the likes of Mazzers. Far less forgiving than classic espresso burrs like Mazzers where you can have a pretty large sweet spot and get thicker shots.

Reverse engineering it, if SSP will fit the mazzer SJ and I have SSPs, then maybe they should fit the T64! Might be worth a gamble for 50quid!

dang2484 it’s your call at the end of the day but just because both fit in the SJ doesn’t mean both will fit in the T64, the SSP also fit the DF64. Mazzer burrs just seem to have an irregular inner burr size, some people tried the newer burrs from the Philos in other grinders and also couldn’t get them to fit.

Then again the T64 carrier may fit, so do report back if you try!

I’ve found a website that gives the inner diameter and depth of the Mazzer burrs so I’ll measure my SSPs and see how they compare.

Mazzer burrs tend to be a nominal 9.5 mm thick. SSPs tend to be a nominal 9.6mm thick.

My experience has been that SSP burrs have a slightly smaller diameter than Mazzer burrs…but not by much, this means if a Mazzer burr fits into a recessed carrier and SSP one definitely will.

dang2484 also I picked up a cheap pair of used 64mm dlc burrs on eBay so will report back if those fit once they arrive, apparently they’re midway between the traditional taste of the Mazzers and the more modern, brighter flavour presentation of the SSP HU.

So the 8.5mm is irrelevant as that just will alter the zero adjustment.

The bit that matters is the flange depth as that will dictate the o ring size.

For the 189d and 200d the internal is 37.00 and the flange is 1.4mm but thats a bit trickier to get an accurate measurement without slip blocks and only having my trusty tape measure to hand (ok i lie kennedy vernier!! But still about as accurate as our favourite influencer with a dial indicator gauge.).

I have just removed the SSP from the philos and gone back to the i200 burrs. So measured the SSP at the same time

Interestingly, these are 38 mm internal. They are SSP espresso red and the internal flange depth is 2 mm

The 2mm o ring did its job

I’ve finally managed to get this into the house (I had to convince my wife that getting another grinder was essential to my well being).

I’m just giving it a clean and a look over before trying it out for the first time later.

Some points…

300w motor.
Variable speed - when turned on the knob indicated 900-1900.
The box has specs indicated on the outside including tick boxes for type of burrs included. These have not been ticked so I assume stock burrs unless anyone on the forum can tell different from the pics. The seller did say they were stock so assume that’s the case. I am happy regardless as I think I got a good deal.
Looks to be a decent condition (needs a clean to get some of the old coffee out of the usual places). There is a scratch on the adjustment ring that I was aware of. At some point I will probably sand and respray if it ends up being front and centre.
It seems to be stepped rather than stepless. There is a noticeable click when adjusting. Small steps and plenty of them but not stepless. @DavecUK I read your orginal posts and I think you mentioned the one you had for testing was similar? I read that you removed the pin which changed it to stepless. Did that work well for you after the fact? I might do the same, was it a case of just removing the pin with a pair of pliers? I will use it as is for now.

@DavecUK - I saw in an earlier post you mentioned that you used the variable speed instead of the bellows to ensure less retention. I prefer the look without bellows, did you increase the speed once most of the grinds were out or decrease? I would like to try this so the bellows don’t have to be used - thanks.

I’m going to have a play this afternoon with it and will report back. Any other pointers or things to check please feel free to let me know.

You’ve done well with the burrs, not SSP but looks like the TiN/TiCN coated Italmills. These were offered as an optíonal upgrade for the DF64’s stock Italmills originally, but as far as I’m aware they will give you the same general taste profile with the harder coating. You don’t really see these now as DFs ship with their own manufactured burrs, with DLC now offered as the premium coating.

Yes once it’s finished grinding the beans just speed it up for a few secs and slow it down and repeat a few times, or just keep it at the highest rpm whatever you find works best!

Enjoy the new grinder, and report back on how you find the burrs!
