The Nothing Phone

I wondered if there were any users of the above? My Iphone is going to be changed within the next year or so. Apart from the phone, I have a macbook and an apple tv box. I only use the box for casting on to the tv. I know that for normal Android phones there are apps you can cast onto apple products with. But, the Nothing looks quite interesting

If you have an apple eco system… It’s best for you to stay inside the eco system if you want to maximise its usability and capabilities.

Was about to say the same.

‘Handoff’ as Apple calls it makes it very easy to jump between devices - copy on iPhone, paste on Mac. Continue web browsing from Mac to iPhone on the same page etc.

AirPlay is also widely used on things like Sonos and TVs etc for simple streaming to them.

If you don’t use any of these things it’s not really an issue but if you do, whilst there are apps and workarounds and dongles etc it’s never quite as seamless or efficient.

Having said all that, I do think the ‘Nothing’ phone is interesting! Some colleagues have one and seem to like them.

For ‘unbranded’ versions of Android I know the Pixel phones are well regarded and look quite good!

Nothing interesting about it…In fact I always bought Chinese phones before Huawai, Xiomi etc.. Finally I bit the bullet and bought a Samsung S23 Ultra in June 23, great phone and I will definitely replace it with another Samsung when replacement is due. Wish I had bought one a long time ago.

DavecUK I just begrudge the price for an iphone. When I was working I used to change my iphone, ipad, macbook and imac every single year as it was just a claimable business expense. Now I am retired it is different. My 2 year old macbook that I spend around 12 hours a day on and I love, is playing up. I will probably wipe it and re-install but the thought of going back to a Windows based laptop and having to relearn everything again does not appeal. I bought my iphone 13 max pro as a return from giffgaff just before the 14 came out and I stupidly bought the 512 gig model and I have used 46 gigs so that was a waste! I no longer care about having the newest, latest thing but feel kind of trapped in the apple world! I did venture away from apple a few years ago when they hacked me off. I bought a brand new 10 or 11 and it had an annoying fault where message alerts would not make a sound. I complained and was told to wait for an update that would no doubt sort it out, so I voted with my feet of course and bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 that I liked so changed it for a 5. That then became a Samsung Galaxy of some sort before I reverted back to apple. I suppose I keep my current phone till it is knackered! Same with coffee machines. I have had my Evo Leva since June 2021 which is a world record for me!

Yeah the mrs has a Samsung 23 and she loves it. The camera is really really good on it.

Had a mooch around earlier in year ,few things mentioned security not the best. But they could be whispers. I do use the Nothing ear ear phones, excellent quality and sound.

I totally understand. I’ve used Mac’s for 20+ years, initially for work when the graphics software we used wasn’t available for PC!! But also for my home computer.

I had to get a PC a couple of years ago for work (needed a powerful one for 3D graphics and it’s much much cheaper to get power via a PC). I prefer the Mac OS by a mile. It just feels a bit more stable to me and as above, I really like how seamlessly all the devices work together. There’s still a few Mac-only apps I use also.

The thing about iPhones (and other Apple hardware) is they hold their value very very well. I always buy my iPhones outright and then every two to three years or so I can usually sell the old one and buy a new one so the overall cost isn’t dissimilar to some of the main Android phones.

I just upgraded an Apple Display and sold my 12 year old one for £250!!

I’m not going to say one ecosystem is better than the other but if you’re invested in the Apple one, it’s hard to move over to the other.

I have the Samsung S24 ultra and I am impressed with it, it works flawless, I also have an iPhone 14 pro max, my first iPhone ever, I like it too a lot.

I am a simple bloke, and maybe it is an age thing, but all I want from a phone is to make and receive calls, and texts. Have WhatsApp (to speak to my sister living in Spain) and FaceTime (for my mates living in Kiddlington and Folkestone) and be able to access the internet now and again for this and my coffee forum when out and about. As for apps, there are only a handful I use regularly. As for how many pixels for photographs, not bothered as whatever I take (usually stuff I put on here) is never going in a gallery or entered into a competition.

Now I know there will be phones out there that are simple and cheap, but I will admit I do love an apple phone. I was given one many years ago as a gift and the quality of build, screen etc alone was then far superior to any other phone I had owned. BUT…and it is a big but. The cost! Consequently, I have never had a brand-new iPhone, always a refurb or second/third hand. At the moment I have an iPhone 8…stop laughing! I like the compact size, it suits me fine, but unfortunately and not surprisingly, the battery is on its way out as it seems to lose its charge pretty quick.

I would love another iPhone, but I just cannot afford at this present time a newer one and even older models as someone has said, hold their price. There is just one other bug bare too… when companies including Apple themselves stop supporting a model because they deem them too old. I use a VPN on my phone and the company have said they are no longer supporting anything below IOS 17 apple stopped updating my phone from IOS 16. Even apple have done this too. A few years ago now, I will admit we did save and splash out and buy a brand spanking new iPad, because at the time nothing could beat it, and we ended up having to throw it, because Apple no longer supported it or would update the software. Now this may also be the case with Other manufacturers such as Samsung etc I don’t know, but when it happens to an Apple product, the cost of replacement is for me anyway prohibitive.

This is the only reason I have never owned an Apple PC/laptop as much as I would love one. I have had my Dell computer for years and I have never had any company including my VPN supplier tell me they are no longer supporting the product because of ‘old’ software on my computer.

I will have to find a new (to me) iPhone and it will be used, but hopefully loved.

Sorry to be annoying but one thing to bear in mind is that if you do use any of the cross-device features between Mac and iPhone you’ll want to make sure both devices can support the latest updates so they can still talk to each other.

If your Mac is only two years old you should be fine for a number of years but I think the current iOS supports back to the iPhone X (2017), which is only one generation behind the 11.

If they have a good deal on a 12 or 13 then you should be ok for at least 2-3 years.

Had an iPhone in 2012. Decided to ditch it when I couldn’t transfer music from my iTunes account to my wife’s iPhone.

Moved to Samsung and have never looked back.

Having to use a Mac in my new job and I completely hate it. Not a fan of Apple at all

I think both ecosystems, Google or Apple, are fantastic. Google/Android have come a long way.

Fact is… if you have an Apple computer MacOS, or apple devices, AppleTV, it would be silly to have an Android device. If you are a Windows user, or ChromeOS, or Linux… you might be better off with Android.

If you don’t care about the integration with the EcoSystem… buy whatever phone you like the most.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned this but double check how long the phone you choose will be supported for with updates. I got a Google pixel last year with one of the reasons being the longer update support offered than most other companies.

Yeah this is a good point.

Not sure about Android but iOS is currently supporting back to IPhone XS which I think is 2017.

I’m guessing they’ll deprecate the oldest model as each new one is released so models roughly 6-7 years old should be supported.
