I am sure many Niche owners have forgotten to put the grinds cup under the chute when grinding beans. I know I have several times. But what hapened this morning was a new one to me. If I become at all distracted from a routine, anything can happen. This morning I prepared my morning americano in the usual way. As soon as I pulled the handle down I went and turned the kettle on. When I came back I noted a few drips so started the timer without lifting the lever. My wife said to me, what is that noise? Of course the machine was pulsing every few seconds but my old grey matter could not computate what was happening. Oddly enough I still extracted around 34 gms in 28 seconds but at 2.5 bar! At the end I realised my error but drank it anyway. It was a bit thin but hinted at what was to come.
I wondered what other oap moments folks would like to share

dfk41 The usual ones, which aren’t significantly different to your descriptions. Some examples are as follows:

    • Grinding without a cup, that too for filter. It would have finished grinding before even realising the mistake
    • Loading the PF thinking it is loaded, pull a shot and then realise after seeing the water gushing through
    • Dumping the fresh coffee powder from the PF thinking a shot has already been completed.

Distractions, random thoughts and signs of grey cells are clearly aging. 😀

I tend to catch most before following through but i do occasionally put two lots of beans in the grinder, I start thinking its taking a bit too long and then realise.

Another thing I did today was grinding at a wrong grind size for filter. I have two grind settings for filter, which are #27 for manual brews like V60/Hario Switch and #17 for the Aromaboy on the Duo.

Without checking the grind size, I ground the coffee, and started brewing on the Hario Switch. Normally, 18g coffee and 270g water require 6 × 45g x 40s pulses for a total brew time of 4:30 mins for self. At the start of the 2nd pour, I realised the mistake, quickly adjusted the wait time between pours from 40s a pulse to 30s, reduced the dry bed time by a minute to 3:30 mins and ended with a very nice cup.

It happens to every one of us. I don’t like wasting coffee. I drink irrespective of the taste. 😊

Yep, grinding without the cup is a regular occurrence for me.

More than once I’ve very nearly poured milk into the reservoir. Also nearly steamed an espresso with the steam wand.

      About Me

      4 days later

For two years on the trot I have forgotten to take my fingers away from under a whetstone sharpened to a razor’s edged knife when cutting veg, resulting in two hospital visits. Luckily, my Churchill impression has not been affected, but since buying a proper meat slicer, I am worried that my Christmas Panto Captain Hook performance might become that much more realistic.
