A Jolly (v pro) Time !

Evening, so out of the blue the new mazzer was delivered to a neighbour yesterday… hoorah.

I have literally just got it out of the box - setup the portafilter holder which is extremely adjustable.

The first possible issue (almost) was fitting the beast on my tiny coffee bar.. so a bit of rearranging later I have got it all on. It makes the allgrind look like a small toy.

I realise this is a commercial bit of kit - but it’s beautifully finished(I got the black one - no choice there) - with plenty of accessories to help you adapt the grinder to any size of portafilter. Plus I like the magnetic clip for the lid so I can stick the label of the bag out in front.

I gave the innards a quick hoover - as I could see some test coffee had been put through it in the factory (and the zero point set then as well).

So I loaded it up with the next bag from the bay variety pack - stuck the grinder on “3” and did a couple of coffees to try out. I seemed to pick a pretty good start point.. though I think I need to try it with one of my local coffee roasters which I have used before before I can make any real comments.

So the good - it’s actually pretty quiet when running - and it’s very very quick. There is a fan which kicks in for about 3 mins after a run - but even that is no louder than what you would hear from a PC.

The portafilter button - and the ability set the grind time with a pause is great - just what I was looking for.. push get coffee- quick shake and a second push to finish.

The access to the burrs is simple and of course you don’t lose the setting as the entire (heavy) plate lifts off with the top burr.

Its a seriously over the top grinder for my 2/4 coffees a day :) but even on the first couple of doses the coffee looked very light and fluffy……

Also with the increase in price of the Philos - this actually worked out a bit cheaper to buy - the website I got it from (Hamlet) seemed to be about 100 quid less than other sites I has come across in the UK (and the commercial Mazzers pricing is all over the place with some websites charging more than 500 quid extra)

If it’s anything like the previous generation you should be able to get a short hopper which will make a huge difference to the overall scale.

OD grinders get sidelined these days due to the prevalence of single dosing but I’ve still got a soft spot for them. Something about being able to just jam your PF into a grinder that feels like it will outlast you, and watching a dose of fluffy coffee appear in a handful of seconds.

Just found this on Google, pretty sure that’s the original Jolly short hopper which you should be able to get for about £25 online.

I tried it with a DF64 but have since gone back to my Mythos and it does away with weighing, wdt etc 👌

Looks a beast.

How do you find retention and exchanged grinds between sessions? Do you find it impacts your first drink of a session, or do you purge out stale coffee before starting a session?

Tal er its been on the bar 24 hours and I have had 2 shots through it 😂

Though with the allgrind I just dosed to the weight I wanted and never really worried about retention/exchange - when I changed beans (usually do a kilo at a time ) then I would give it a hoover first. I suspect it will be the same with mazzer.

I will say when I took off the top of the mazzer there is not much space for the coffee to stick around / so hoping its nice and easy to manage.

I purposely bought it for the work flow - stick in the portafilter - hit the button - it fills 75% then pauses - little shake to level and click again to finish off - for me thats perfect 👌

I had on demand grinders (Eureka Mignon) before the single dose Niche and I loved how easy it was to just use beans from a bigger hopper, especially the timer based specialita, but I did obsess about shot time variability which I attributed to stale grinds. Which led me to purge 2g or so of coffee every session which annoyed me eventually!

In hindsight it could have been variability of my HX machine temp just as much as it could have been stale grinds. At the moment I tend to switch between decaf and a couple of other beans, so single dose works for me. But if I ever go down to nailing a whole bag at a time without switching, then a hopper based grinder would be back on the bench for sure.

I used to just stick about a day’s worth in the hopper each morning. I couldn’t taste the difference between that and single dosing fresh.

A few days in a hopper yes, but not a few hours.

I wonder if the I200 burrs work well in the V Pro.

If I didn’t grind for filter as well I’d 100% still have an on-demand grinder.

HarveyMushman From my hopper days, do you not need a reasonable weight of beans in the hopper to push the beans into the grinding mechanism? Otherwise you end up adjusting the grind after every shot?

I found if you stick to a similar amount of about 50-60g chucked in each day it would all grind through well at the same setting.

You’re right though, if you fill the hopper more, there would be a difference in grind setting between a full hopper and an empty one.

Fwiw when i single dosed my major you would get out what went in, well within 0.1-0.2

Ao would imagine no different here, not that i think it matters much

HarveyMushman I think it depends on how the beans are fed into the burrs. A lot of grinders use an auger and I am pretty sure our host did extensive testing on a Ceado E92. This was a monster conical that he adapted for single dosing back in the days before SD really took off. But, in reality it matters not!

Have been throwing in about 100g at a time, into mythos and haven’t noticed any difference at all to tossing in 1kg.

That said, I’m unable to detect all the minute flavours many here talk about haha

Jason1wood I am having to trawl the far annals of my very poor memory Jason. I think you will find the pour time decreases without a weight of beans. The downside to a hopper is inconsistency. By that I mean, the plus side is if 5 friends turn up you insert the portafilter, click and away you go. The downside is that your grind is set by a timer so if you put 250 gms of beans in the ground and weighed each shot you would get a wide range of output, especially as the beans start to empty out.
If you are not a single doser (and I never used to be) then it is not important to know you have put 17.35gms of beans in and received 17.25 gms out. But that does affect taste to a certain extent, as does output. A shot will taste different at 1:2 than 1:3. Then of course, if you are a milk drinker then that covers everything as well!

Yes tbh even if I did see slight variance in extractions throughout a hopper it was rarely enough to ruin the taste.

Maybe for a super taster, but super taster I am not.

I have the odd espresso, but me and her are both milk based drinkers, so not a massive issue.

To be honest, got a bit sick of the faff of single dosing, maybe as I was using the Gaggia and Silvia, haven’t single dosed on the Evo as of yet as the gaggia and DF64 are at girlfriends

I am a 99% milk drinker tbh - and its probably why I like a darker roast to get a punch of flavour..

I usually just stick in about 300 grams (as that’s about all I could get in the all grind hopper) and work through it.

Luckily I guess I am also not a super taster….

Thanks for the tip I have ordered a smaller hopper - though went for the 600 not the 320 though that was because it came with the new lid which has the slight seal and the indent to hold the cover card magnet :)

Should be here tomorrow. Then I can pack everything else away - along with the all grind as a backup for a rainy day (or if I suddenly become a filter/moka drinker….)
