New Mazzer Mini - Grind by Weight

I like the idea of it, I currently single dose but that’s to maintain consistency rather than trying to keep beans fresh. If there was an accurate grind by weight grinder available then I could be tempted, the simplicity of a hopper fed grinder is great but reduced consistency in a home environment is what has put me off

I clearly not that picky - i set the time a bit light and just top up .5 second on the single shot - as long as its close enough I am good to go. Both the allgrind and jolly are pretty good i until the last dregs when they will be light 😂

The gbw mini looks good - just interested in how they price them where they have stripped a few features which made my purchase go towards the jolly.

I’m in two minds.

I really do miss on-demand grinding for espresso. Despite the benefits and the fact it’s very much a ‘first-world’ problem, I find single dosing for espresso a faff, especially when you have friends over and don’t bulk pre-measure your doses. Also when you’re dialling in a finicky coffee and you have to keep measuring out doses…

However I do really enjoy having one grinder for espresso and pour over and the I200 burrs are very very good.

Based on other manufacturers pricing for timed vs gbw grinders the Mini gbw will likely be around £1000 + tax which, pound for pound for the home user is a lot.

I’m almost certain I’ll stick with the Philos, it’s too good to get rid of just to save 10 seconds of weighing doses really.

I know this is not Mazzer related but having converted back to a hopper system I could not be happier. Once you accept the is it 16gm or 17gm, do I really care scenario then for me, I could not be happier. On the Mythos, once you get below 80 gms or so there is a noticeable effect on the grind needing to tighten, so I just chuck more beans in!

Hopper fed is a definitely better workflow - I don’t think anyone objects. But what about retention? Has retention on the Mini and Mythos been measure objectively?

For the 2 cups of coffee I have every day (one when I’m at work) single dosing does the trick for me.

MediumRoastSteam In the case of the Mythos, the flat burrs are mounted at a 45 degree angle. There will be retention but not a great deal gets mixed in. The vast majority sits behind the bottom burr as opposed to between the burrs. At some point I will whip the top burrs off and have a look but retention has never bothered me

I would have thought, by design theres always going to be a lot of coffee at various stages of grind sitting between the burrs between shots, which can be between days. How can there not be unless tou run the hopper through to dry on every shot or every day.

For home use of a few cups a day surely single dose makes sense . For a cafe at several cups per minute single dose would be madness!

Retention can be pretty high on some OD grinders, especially the larger commercial ones.

Personally I’ve never tasted a difference if my first shot of the day has a few grams of ‘old’ ground coffee in it from the previous afternoon. Obviously if it was something like 8g from four days prior it would probably be noticeable.

I think it’s another thing like precise weights, like @dfk41 said where a lot of people have just sort of adopted the belief that it will have a significant effect on coffee flavour when in reality, plenty of people probably wouldn’t taste the difference.

One definite downside of OD grinding is not being able to easily switch coffees between shots. Personally I don’t often do that anymore for espresso but I know plenty of people have multiple coffees on the go.

I think SD will eventually largely die out.

Can’t see the benefit unless you’re using different coffees constantly, or maybe caf and decaf 🤔

I’m not sure that most people truly believe they can taste a few grams of old coffee or their dose varying by half a gram. I think that people aim for consistency where it can easily be achieved as getting great tasting coffee consistently can be hard, manage the controllable elements so you only have to worry about the other bits

When I had my Profitec T-64, the retention was approx. 7g. I definitely was able to taste that (the stale grounds from the day before) the next morning. I found my purges first thing in the morning were getting larger and larger, until I decided enough was enough and went to single dosing (Kinu M68 back in the day).

Coffee is full of ‘useful’ anecdotes. A lot of them are really difficult to argue with. Personally, I do not believe there are the number of super tasters that there claims to be. The vast majority of coffee shops do not single dose. Whether you are grinding 100 gms or 2 kilos an hour, the retention is the same amount. It either bothers you or not. Remember, until the single dosing fad came along, everyone was still quite happy

Ha! Single dosing never caught on until the Niche Zero hit the market. Prior to that there were a few high end `SD grinders but they were not very good. I had a Versalab M3 that lasted about 3 weeks. Myself and cfuk member David Bondy both bought them at the same time. He sent his to Frank Durra to have it customised whereas I sold mine! Meanwhile everyone got on with life making coffee. Then the Zero hit the streets along with the mythology which has grown now to an enthusiast having to have a 58.55mm (definitely not a 58.50mm as that extra 0.05mm makes such a difference), stirrers, levellers, special baskets, a PuqPress in case you do not know how to tamp, single dosers, scales that not only weigh but interact with your phone and the bollocks goes on and on and on and on and on…….
