Cost of subscriptions

We live in a different age to the times I grew up in. Folks now seem to accept paying for everything via monthly subscriptions……so, ignoring the tv licence, what exactly are you paying out?

Amazon Prime £95 pa

Spotify family £60 pa

Sky TV cost £86.50 pm I have not separated the tv from the internet and phone as if you remove one it really pushes up the cost of the others. This annoys me as everyone pays a different amount for the same service. Sky ought to have one price

I’m not actually sure how much some of these are so I’ve ballparked it.

We’ve got Prime and Spotify, so just copying your prices - £95/60.

Sky is around £100 I think although that includes internet. I watch a lot of Tennis so have the sports channels/TNT.

AppleTV, maybe £10 a month?

Nintendo/Xbox are around £10 a month each I think so £20.

A couple of sheet music libraries which total about £10 pm.

I think there’s something on my car to access some of the functionality on there but it’s less than £5 pm.

Lightroom and VSCO photography apps which are about £10pm.

So more than £2k a year…

I don’t mind though, we spend far more on mediocre meals out and holidays that end up being less relaxing than staying at home… the subscriptions for stuff we actually enjoy are a comparative drop in the ocean!

theres talk of the bbc tv licence being balled into you council tax! because people are stopping paying it in droves!!! it has also been said that it will go off the price of the house and you can not opt out!!

I think in the current climate Game Pass represents amazing value. The fact you can occasionally get games on release day that would otherwise cost £50+.

Pound for pound it’s probably the subscription we get the most value from.

Edit as I tried to cancel, they gave me a half price offer, £35.50 for another year, suckered me in.

I see people forgot to add their TV licence in…I didn’t as I don’t have one any more, stopped it years ago and not missing live TV or Iplayer one little bit. V V annoying about their wish to add it to council tax. I have a large house, so I will pay more than most for a licence I neither want or will ever use!

How do you get spotify family for 60quid a year- for me its 20 quid a month (though tbh the kids use it so much its probably worth it)

Netlfix is the top cost at about 22 a month.

Lots of other stuff on offers which I will cancel after deal.

Paramount is 35 quid a year on a offer which they seem to reoffer when I goto cancel.

You can get a better VPN and save money. For example IPVanish seem to have no restrictions on how many people share the log in details…..and it is as good as any of them. The insurance on your Sky boxes is a waste. Where are they going to go or be damaged? I have a Sky Q box, think HD is a waste of time, Broadband and home phone package, no extras and the cost has just shot up to about £85 pm. I detest that they charge everyone different rates.

These costs are insane….

get rid of sky boxes, get rid of sky box insurance reassess Netflix package.

You don’t break that £125 down…but if my 500/500 broadband is 23.50 and a top Netflix package is £19…are the sky boxes/sub costing you £83 per month and you pay £13.50 insurance per month on top of that!!!!! If it is, that’s around £1200 per annum

I dumped sky 25 years ago, because they take the piss.

Besides the necessities (phone and internet) my only 2 subscriptions are £2/month for extra storage on Google Photos and Amazon Prime, and that’s also sporadic.

Sky can be a huge cost these days for sure, my in-laws were paying well over £100 just for TV (presumably with all the Sports/Movies).

Ours was about £80 but that was full-fibre broadband (real-world speed is about 900mbps) and TV. As above we added sports since Sky Sports Tennis was launched which we watch a lot, and is now around £100.

I don’t love the price but it’s a rock-solid service and I prefer the simplicity of quickly watching shows we’ve recorded than finding/streaming them from one of the OD platforms.

I must admit though, it’s increasingly frustrating having all the different networks each requiring their own subscription and then you need an account with them too, then you need to login etc.

I use a 4K projector (cos it’s more convenient and takes up less room than a TV) running android TV an earlier version of Google TV…It’s seamless, you log in once, when you set up your account for a new subscription, and then you don’t have to log in again, just select the service. Plus there’s lots of free streaming channels.

To me sky sound a bit like it’s an expensive pair of pants. If I needed, (which I don’t) I could upgrade to a symmetrical 1000/1000 service for £3 extra per month

I really would urge anyone using sky or sky glass etc.. to re-evaluate the actual value they are getting and the lock in.

I’m definitely open to alternatives. I’ve tried a few of the main ‘stick’ style TV platforms but not Google. These days more and more content we watch seems to be outside of Sky’s main channel range.

On internet, who is your provider?

I trialled the gigabit fibre thinking I wouldn’t need it but ended up really benefiting from the speed. Video games especially, with most being downloadable now and enormous files.

Mine was Box Broadband, taken over by London based community fibre. I like the fact that the muxes at the exchange are no over crowded and the speeds are symmetrical. I don’t believe I would benefit from Gigabit speeds, as there is usually only me in the house.
