she was TOLD by doctors do avoid caffeine, alcohol and a few other things following a serious medical incident we agree that i would test the situation without warning her randomly at a time of my choosing.

i did at random without warning and she ended up with a violent headache and was weeks after out conversation.

I believe the situation is not psychological. NOT open to further discussion.

dfk41 this is an interesting point, I’ve been once in Madrid to a coffee tasting, someone from Colombia, several very tasting coffees brewed with a Behmor and only in the end the lady told us that the last coffee was a decaf. I wouldn’t have guessed in a thousand years, so I could have decaf and don’t have a bloody idea. Strange how the human mind works…

you get more consistency in the hopper fed, but then you have the extreme of people had feeding zerno beans, horses for courses, hopper fed can stale vs single dose, the niche zero has a disc to feed beans that the duo doesnt

I’ve never owned a hopper fed grinder and imagine I would find it very limiting.

I like to roast many different beans on my little Hive roaster which is perfect for my small coffee needs. 150g capacity with roughly 130 ish out and I can then have multiple coffees on the go ,not to mention decaf, which is wonderful.

This along with owning two different espresso machines with different sized baskets, I’m very often changing grind settings. I frequently need to adjust the grinder according to different roast profiles and using different extraction styles etc.

I personally prefer to drink less of something really good and for a light coffee consumer , a small capacity home roaster and a single dose grinder is perfect.

For me roasting a kilo of beans and ploughing my way through the same bean in a hopper day in day out wouldn’t appeal to me, I like to mix things up a bit .

Platypus just curious, no offence, you never get bored of all this rituals? Don’t you want, every now and then, just to have a good coffee without all the trouble and working and weighting? Personally I wouldn’t have time for all this, I envy people who have so much time for everything…

dfk41 I did and I was very happy, never single dosed as I only had commercial flat and conical grinders. Some people like them, some other don’t, no one holds the final answer as this is very personal and subjective. I don’t make espresso at home anymore but the day I’ll do it again I’ll buy again a used commercial grinder, like Compak K10 or Mazzer Kony, those grinders delivered flawless. There is absolutely no need to single dose in order to get a very decent cup of coffee, this is one of the many myths around…IMHO :)

Yes, but the other way around to someone who needs decaf and doesn’t get it. It’s basically poisonous which is what @dfk41 was saying would not be noticed. I can assure you it definitely is.

I guess in a similar way feeding peanuts to somebody who has a peanut intolerance

No offence taken 😊. Nope, I never get bored. In fact it keeps me sane ( probably up for debate) and exercises the grey matter.

If I don’t want any faff I just make a French Press or go to a coffee shop 🤣

profesor_historia depends when you are paying £30 for 250g of a specialist roasted coffee then you want to get the best if it, and in general that is single dosing

If you want a bean to dump in milk then hopper away😝

As for ritual and time, takes 10s to weigh beans its hardly going to make you late,

The insinuation that the fact my wife needs to have decaf and not full caffeine drinks is something other than medical fact and, she would not know if i made her a standard coffee is quite insulting, not the joke you seem to think it is.

She has not chosen on a whim she is no longer going to drink coffee in any other form than decaf, so yes, i stand by my original comment that Mythos is NOT suitable for everyone. You like it . You use it . don’t try and imply its suitable for everyone . for me it would he a very bad choice.

I would expect you to be among a group of people who actually understood some simple medical facts and not turn them in to a laughing matter.

Adrianmsmith Dear me Adrian…..my original comments about not telling her were tongue in cheek matey. Quite why you feign offence at something that is so obviously a throw away comment is quite beyond me, but I guess it is what it is. Several years ago I was advised to switch over to decaf by my doctor after years of terrible sleep patterns and I did for 8 months before realising that caffeine was not the culprit. I still have those terrible sleep patterns, hence the reply after 2am. You do realise that the decaffeination process does not remove 100% of the caffeine? Therefore might it not be more sensible to not drink coffee at all as that is the only way of guaranteeing zero intake. Just a thought. As far as I am aware you cannot taste caffeine therefore she would not know the difference seems to be a valid ‘joke’. Quite why you cannot see the funny side is beyond me but hey ho

We went Niche Zero to Mythos. Not only did we find the coffee much better, but the end to faffing around was a delight. There are downsides as pointed out…..the ability to easily change what beans you are using etc. I know many love the ritual of the experience of espresso…..for us, it’s not really important - we’d sooner have good coffee, fast. With the addition of a brilliant wee auto-tamper from Aliexpress, the process is streamlined and enjoyable.

A feature of hopper grinding is the end-of-run beans that wouldn’t grind right in the hopper without the compacting weight of more beans. Rather than the mods others favour, we like to accumulate similar roasts in big bags in the freezer….these dozen-bean mix roasts often turn out to be elite!

ooglewoogle A man after my own heart! I am not trying to knock single dosing, but I am suggesting that many of the perceived benefits are superficial. People mention retention. Yes, the Mythos does have some retention but because the burrs are mounted at a 45 degree angle (yes they are flat) and has quite a high spin speed at 1350 rpm (the newer version spins around 800 rpm) then this helps not to retain coffee. I still maintain that the exchanged grinds will be well below 1gm and I have not measured it. I do not believe that most people could taste this level. I top my hopper up every 3 to 4 days and to keep the grind constant do not wait until the beans disappear down the throat, otherwise you end up tightening the grind.

It is virtually impossible to argue against the perceived benefits of single dosing but do they really follow through? My question was to ask if you have not tried a modern hopper fed grinder then perhaps you have missed out. What has happened is that people become defensive to justify their position. I doubt there are others on the forum who have owned as much kit (and high end kit) as I have. Does that make me an expert? Of course not but I have reverted back to the grinder that I consider to be the finest grinder available. The burrs are amazing, it is hopper fed. I make a minimum of three doubles a day for my consumption and often the same again or more depending on who visits. You can single dose a Mythos if you want the additional faff of weighing out and placing a weight in the throat but to me, that is self defeating.

MediumRoastSteam let’s be very honest, do you think someone, in a blind testing, could notice the “stale” miligrams of coffee from the day before? I don’t think so and however everyone is free to do as they like, there is no correct or wrong here. I don’t think anyone could notice the difference in a cup, let’s be serious.

We purge a few grams if it has been a while between shots/first thing in morning. Not saying we get it all…but it suffices to not then interfere with the pull….and we don’t notice the difference.

I may be missing the point and I have only a sage smart grinder Pro to compare with so obviously not the best grinder in its class. But how do you say milligrams surely there are several grams of partly ground coffee through the system between shots. The system / Burrs do not empty between shots. Unless again, I am missing the point surely you have coffee at various stages from whole beans in the throat, Part ground beans to fully ground beans all sitting in the system between shots up to 23h.

To me, this is absolutely nothing to do with retention because if you were measuring retention you’ll be running the system empty and then measuring the retention which I agree should be milligrams but this is not the case in daily use, is it?

Yes. I was able to with the grinder I had (Eureka Mignon - this was 10 years ago!) and then the Profitec T-64 from Profitec. This was the sole reason I moved to single dosing. They retain a lot more than “miligrams”

Yeah, I love the machine….it’s one of those bits of kit that build affection with it’s solid reliability and good function. We usually top our hopper up daily to not have too many beans loaded, but I’d have to say the years of mantra about the air-tight stored beans seems less important….no noticable deficits (to me) occur with beans in the hopper over only a few days.
