Adrianmsmith The hardest part about moving back to a hopper system, is re-accepting all those things that you have been brainwashed into accepting as part of the routine of making ‘delicious, tasty’ coffee (as one of our leading exponents would say). We are used to measuring in and out and expressing satisfaction at the 0.05 gm difference……I have never been happier! I know for a fact that I am making the best coffee that I have in years by the reaction of guests.

but it shows even the 3k grinders have some retention, which is totally acceptable in my eye,

whether there is stale coffee in the grinder to be exchange it will be there if you single dose or have a hopper,

Mythos grinders when adjusting grind settings requires purging of atleast 10-20 grams. Bearing in mind, that is soley for purging out the grind chamber and chute. Grind setting changes accordinly to how long the beans are aging in the hopper. Which means likely you be dumping out atleast 30-50 grams extra beans during the dialing in process.

Sorry, I am not a fan as you well know but where is this 10 to 20 g from? I would have thought 1 to 2 g when making a significant change butDavid will probably disagree with that even

This is sort of our experience. I saw the Climpsons video once on how they dial in on the Mythos….and they dump a full double basket between adjustments. Certainly, there is a need (for us) to purge while dialing in, but a full shot isn’t necessary imo….circa 10g. While a bit wasteful, I agree, it has forcibly honed my dial-in skills. We have it down now that if the first shot isnt right, the second shot is good to go. The combination of that - and that we often go through kg’s of the same coffee reduces the waste. If the shot wanders with the weather, you can just micro adjust on the hoof, over a few shots, with no waste.

dfk41 I have played with the mythos in my friends cafe. Each grind setting changes we had to purge a full shot before the next grind setting takes effect .there are many tutorial videos I are many mythos one which shows this effect.. there are many cleaning videos for the mythos which shows terrible retention of grounds in the chamber .

Nope, I would be quite happy and expect that sort of range. I suppose it is a guessing game until someone takes the top burrs off on a regular basis and measures. Of course, this will be affected by the bean, the atmospheric conditions, whether the central heating is on, whether the sun shines on to the grinder…….why bother! We all say taste is King…..

rytopa I fully understand the need to purge if changing beans. I would expect the average cafe to grind more beans in a day than a home user in a month therefore more retention, but is this coffee that is exchanged or compacted?If exchanged then it just mixes in with fresh grinds and in a cafe environment is fine. I will remove my top burrs in the next couple of days and see what is there, but unless it is a substantial amount I accept that in place of the endless faff that single dosing leads to. The Mythos is after all a fully commercial grinder and I let taste be the judge of what I am doing. I am still waiting for the first disclosed case of poisoning by stale coffee! If you made a coffee with 18 gms of very stale beans you would taste it but if you made a coffee with 18 gms of fresh coffee then added 1gm of stale I would be very surprised if the average person could taste the difference, especially if they were not told.

I stress, it is very difficult to argue with a lot of the theory that single dosing exposes us to, but I do question exactly how much difference it really makes

Yes. I was able to with the grinder I had (Eureka Mignon - this was 10 years ago!) and then the Profitec T-64 from Profitec. This was the sole reason I moved to single dosing. They retain a lot more than “miligrams”

MediumRoastSteam ok, you are among the 1% who can, but in the big picture I am not sure. I had only used very small hoppers, however this topic I think is too subjective, in order to reach a conclusion someone should use during several days 2 grinders etc :)

Adrianmsmith alright, grams, you’re right. But still believe very few would notice it, the thing is maybe we want to think that of course we will notice the difference. Human mind is very very interesting….

When I tested this the Mignon used to retain approx. 4g of coffee. At the time I was using a VST 15g - so that’s 26% of the dose.

the T-64 was more like 12g behind the chute screen.

MediumRoastSteam From memory, and I have taken the de-clumper screen out several times, I wold say 2 gms but it exchanges with every grind. I realise that this goes against everything we have learnt MRS but I have adapted. There is a reason that cafes on the whole, do not single dose

At home we make 2, maybe 4 coffees a day. In a cafe, they make 4 coffees every 15 minutes, if not more? I have no problems there. If I made a coffee at home at least every 30 minutes, I would be single dosing either :-)

A hopper fed grinder is shit to me who wants 2 to 8 cups per day and not always the same beans. Even with milk!!

That’s 26% of the dose - I was able to notice, at least back them. Otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered moving to single dosing, at all!

I only have 2 cups of coffee a day, sometimes only one (I do not necessarily work from home). And I’d rather have coffee as fresh as possible, rather than whatever was ground 24 hours earlier.
