All conversation is good!. I know there are holes in my argument……but on a serious note and on a personal basis, I have wasted £000’s over the years on descriptors of SO beans only to try and work out how much lsd they had consumed! When Brexit was decalred, a certain forum member visited me and we went out for a meal. I bought a single bag of Rave Wush Wush. It was either £25 or £35 for 250 gms. The tasting notes promised pineapple.

Said forum member rang me when he was 30 minutes (bear in mind my brewed skills are famous, but for all the wrong reasons!) I set away a Clever Dripper on a long steep. When he arrived we drank it and all I can say is wow! It was like going back in time to a saturday morning and taking your 6d pocket money to the newsagent and buying a quarter of Pineapple Chunks. Sadly that has never repeated itself for me. I have stopped drinking brewed therefore stopped buying SO beans. I enjoy blended and have found a supplier from whom I really enjoy the offerings. If everyone was as boring in me with their approach then life would be dull! In exactly the same way @Platypus, that you seem to enjoy the Kafatek grinder that I could not get away with. Variety is indeed the spice of life and money does make the world go round!

Very impressed with build quality etc.

I will do this again next week to find the total retention assuming one wanted for some reason to single dose with this grinder….

It’s not about single dosing. Retention is about drinking stale ground coffee the next morning. From what you just demonstrated, 9g of coffee from the previous session, at least, will end up in the cup the next day.

What is the retention of Mazzer Mini? Can I use it as a single dose grinder?
Mazzer Mini is ment to be used as a hopper grinder, loading beans in the hopper and gradually dosing coffee with the provided user interface. The grinder has a retention of approximately 8 grams - this refers to the coffee that remains in the grinding chamber, behind the burrs, and in the chute. This is the amount of coffee which should be purged after a change in the fineness of the grind, to see a difference in the extraction time. If you are looking for a single dose grinder see the Mazzer Philos. When used in single dosing mode, at steady level (so after the first 3 doses ground), the retention is on average approximately 0.1 g.

In practice i decude on a new grind setting and change it as soon as the shot starts to grind.

I accept its the shot after when i seen the full effect of the setting change.

Ive never thrown a shot out due to not being pleasant as settings to produce it were not to the perfection side of optimal.

Ive thrown out a few when dialling in and massively missing the mark and getting a 10 second shot or so!

But i hear thats the new soup(er) craze

All rhe influencers are at it!

And any shot over 59 seconds or so tends ro go in the sink!!

So what! You can purge it out if you really want. I doubt very much that all 9 gms would be exchanged in one go. Until the Church of Single Dosing appeared this was the norm and I do not remember any meaningful discussions back in the day. I make the point once again, that very few professionals running a business waste their time single dosing! It is a fad that is difficult to argue with held by those who want to win a prize for the most ridiculous coffee prep routines!

Adrian and I can switch our grinders on, put in a pf, a few seconds later tamp and make the shot, meanwhile back in lala land you lot are still deciding which of the 32 coffees you have on the go needs to go to church that day before you weigh, spray, grind, needle, level etc etc…….and the sad thing is, and I will bet anyone any amount they want, their coffee is not head and shoulders above mine, allowing for taste and opinion of course……

I didnt start out with a plan. I didnt do a practice run!! What you see is what happened as always. Boring in parts but true!!

If there’s a more recognised method please share.

Also note that within that weight there is maybe 3 g or so Not quite whole bean but I’m sure can’t be classed as ground. I left them in when shorting out the whole beans after initially emptying the throat into the tray and it can be seen in the tray on one of the shots.

In the past, as you know I have made similar comments to the one of yours above but now having the grinder I can honestly say if I make two cups in a morning just for testing purposes I cannot tell you which is the first and which is the second when drinking and I’m grinding 20.5 g per shot

I’m not questioning your preference for a hopper fed grinder. I’m just stating a fact, that, as demonstrated, at least 9g of ground coffee remains in the chamber. That’s all. If this works for you, that’s fantastic. A hopper fed grinder routine is much simpler than single dosing, I am not saying it isn’t: It’s fast, it’s precise, it’s faff and mess free. However, for my tastebuds, with grinders I had before (Eureka Mignon and the Profitec T-64) I was able to taste the difference in every time. Big time. That’s why I moved to single dosing - first with the Kinu M68 (hated it, so much faff and static) and then the Niche Zero was invented - the rest is history. So that was the main reason I went single dosing: I couldn’t bear purging 9g of coffee twice a day - first thing in the morning and then in the afternoon, after lunch: I only have 2 coffees a day. The other use case for me is that I drink caffeinated coffee in the morning and decaf in the afternoon - so with a single dose grinder, I don’t have stale grinds in between, and I can change the grind setting whenever I want without wasting any coffee.

I like rhe m47 classic. No issues with static 😎 dont know why the classic is better than the simplicity, it simply is!! Never tried the fb m68

One spray of rdt for rhe craig lyn hg1 prime
2 for rhe weber key. Static monster.

No evidence with the mini g, grounds are fluffy and perfectly fluid pushing the Philos in to second place for immeasurable reasons.

May have to sell the kafatek for a second philos ……

Because, altgough the simplicity of the mini g is great and time saving for my main coffee i do still like to swap out and have something different maybe only wanting 1 or 2 cups prior to switching back to my daily honey!!
Kafarek is a bit extravagant for that.

And i cant be arsed remembering to swap philos from decaf to whatever im grinding which is why ive had a seperate decaf grinder for a couple of years.

Its a pity you don’t live close to me as i would love to challenge that and test you on it but it eould take a few morning visits over a few days!!

I have proved ro myself and changed my mind on this subject.

Some people actually buy and enjoy coffee that was ground months age 🤦🏼‍♂️🤪😎☕😁 allegedly.

And its not like theres actual airflow through the grinder when its stood.

Clump smasher effectively stops that even if i lived in an air tunnel. Im in the UK so dont have Aircon producing air movement throufh the kitchen

So are you saying that if you just pre-grind the coffee into an air tight container, the result in the next morning will be the same - taste-wise at least? The dynamics of the shot will be totally different. I’ve tried it :-)

Anyway - we are beating a dead horse. Again, my curiosity was retention on this Mini GBW. Adrian kindly showed me it was 9g. Mazzer states it’s 8g (not far off). It doesn’t do the trick for me, not for my usage patterns. That’s all I wanted to know. If it works for others - fantastic. And I’m grateful for being able to have options available to me.

Without pouring oil on the fire, it is extremely difficult to disagree with the principle of single dosing, in theory. A couple of points though. Firstly you cannot label all hopper fed or SD grinders based on limited experience and secondly I doubt very much if the vast majority off coffee drinkers ACTUALLY have taste buds capable of discerning the differences. Anyone can taste the difference between stale coffee and fresh coffee but fresh coffee with a relatively small amount of stale exchanged? Dave was the only super taster I believed and he took double cream in a lot of the coffee he drank! He thought the exchanged argument was bollox with many more factors influencing the taste outcome.

With the grinder I had - the Profitec T-64, I used to purge 7g - still could taste the different compared to purging 12g. I even modified the grid to exchange it more. I filed in slow motion. I contacted Profitec and BB at the time who gave me a de-clumper screen I could “butcher” to see if I could make things better. We don’t know how many grams is exchanged in the Mini - I’m assuming the design of the chamber of the G and other variants of the Mini are the same. But let’s assume it is 9g (edit: now I read the post above, Mazzer says 8g - but Adrian just demonstrated in his video it was 9g. Anyway, the principle is still the same): That’s 60% of a 15g dose, 50% of an 18g dose, 45% of a 20g dose. That’s not a “small amount”. In my actual experience. In fairness, if I couldn’t taste it, I’d be all over it :-)

Adrianmsmith 8 gms of coffee…..coming from the horses mouth is quite refreshing. Of course that is going to create two impressions: either shock horror, I am going to feint or wow, that is not bad. I drink 3 × 18 gms shots a day and rarely a day goes by without a friend calling in and doubling that. So 6 doubles a day is 108 gms. For ease of maths let us call that 7.5% wastage. The coffee I drink costs me £19.35 per kilo including delivery so I am wasting £1.45 per kilo in this example. But, since I qualify for free postage and 12% discount for buying it on subscription I think that point is covered. I drink predominantly black coffee and despite me ribbing myself with the poor taste buds joke, I reckon I am as capable taste wise as the next person. I cannot remember the last time I threw away a coffee. At Xmas I opened and drank a bag of coffee roasted back in May. Once the 250gm bag was open it was consumed in 3 or 4 days. I did adjust the grind once and I detected no discernible taste difference.

I do not expect to convert anyone with my findings. If you are happy single dosing then I say each to their own! Of course I can see the advantages it offers but for me it is not the Holy Grail. I have always tended to buy coffees roasted to a similar degree. Some are more difficult to dial in than others, but I am never far away……perhaps it is experience…….I do not go from light to dark……..I drink blends because I like them and because I have been drinking the same coffee since May 12th I am quite happy. I still have a niche Zero (and always will) so can accomadate bean changes or one off’s…..onwards and upwards!

I am another hopper. user on the Ceado E37 , I admit it is a cut down from the original ( considerably smaller)

I did try using a tube but found it needed frequent topping up and reverted to the hopper.

my preference is for more ‘traditional’ coffee taste either as double espresso or flat white.

I would not have the patience to separate and weigh numerous doses or the space to store them.

The Ceado deposits a nice even timed dose / double or single then just tamp & brew

First shot ran 0.5s quicker but i wasn’t concentrating and didn’t get pre infusion identical(!?)

I don’t like straight espresso so no point me comparing in that respect

I do keep trying and can drink 1:1 with water but still prefer flat white.

I don’t like espresso from anyone else either before you say!!

Had 25 × 50g over december from the brew company in denmark. obviously brewed using the flat max 2 not the mini g

So 2 shots from each bag and the rest went in to a unique blend!!

I always make the first as espresso and sip then dilute 1:1

1 drank 2.

The rest went in to milk 😘🤔

So are these 2 this morning identical?

I keep shipping one then two then two then one etc. I am not doing this blind obviously and I do know which is which

The best I can say is the second cup has slightly more sweetness. Struggling to detect anything other than that and the first one is just near identical but just that little bit less sweetness, not harsh or “better” in any way.

Both had 170ml milk and both had same start temperature when i began to drink.

If you were to let the hopper / grinder run empty and give it a quick bellows blast total retention

Thanks a lot for your reply. I think La Marzocco’s portafilter is 58mm, so I expect I’ll be able to do without a dosing funnel, so I guess that means this will be my next grinder 😃
