Lets kick off with some beautiful measuring equipment and it's even coffee related for some projects I'm doing. Micrometer (1 micron), depth gauge (1 micron) and calipers (10 micron). A pleasure to use, especially the callipers as my other set are Mitutoyo, but 60 years old (my dads) and in thou. Hmm amazing how much stuff you end collecting in a short amount of time…

Did not like the funnel I got from Amazon - though it has magnets it does not fit onto the ims basket (on the 9barista) - just sort of sits on the curved edge..

So got these from bella barista - perfect for when I get a 58mm machine in the future.

Viton O-rings for the bottom of the E-61 mushroom.

If anyone needs those, the size is BS210 (Inside Diameter 18.64mm, cross cut 3.53mm). The pack of 10 pictured above came from here for a very reasonable price.

I got Viton (FKM) as they were recommended by @DavecUK for the flow control device and I have seen that they are holding up much better than the EDPM o-rings that I had before.

Here is a picture of the EPDM o-ring completely split after a couple years of use:

Doram For anyone buying ‘O’ rings for E 61 mushroom these are the wrong size.

I bought these as spec and they are too thick, they become displaced as the mushroom is tightened= water leaking around the head.

The R2 Extract refractometer & Microbalance scale were just delivered to me today, looking forward to trying them out as I have never used a refractometer before. I was surprised at the size of the scale, but that is compared to the Acaia Lunar that I have used up until now

Whoops sorry just saw this! It was $299 for the set, it came very quickly (like 4 days!). It feels well built, but I have literally no experience or knowledge of refractometers. I am looking forward to learning more though and testing my shots, I will make sure to post a review after a few tests if anyone is interested in seeing more of the Difluid devices. The scale is nice, although definitely feels huge compared to the scales i have been using! The app is very nice,

I think it could be a great help for anyone still developing their ‘pallete’ to know if they’re in the ‘ballpark’, especially as all beans are different.

I am confused why they used distilled water to ‘zero’ the device as I would have thought that the water used to brew would be a better baseline? Maybe I’m not understanding something.

Distilled water should be used because the calculations for the refractive index are based on the value of distilled water which is a known value and TDS would alter that.

I don’t think there is a huge difference in using tap water (as long as it is not too hard), but it is a good best practice to use distilled. It also makes the values more comparable between people if the zero point is the same.

As far as using a refractometer day to day it is a bit of a faff, especially for espresso. It isn’t too bad for filter brews but doing it for every brew can be tiresome. But the difluid R2 is a lot easier to use than the atago and VST that I have used, although the price for the difluid is about £200 now

I figured that ‘zero’ would be factory calibrated, and then you’d want to rule out the particulates in the brew water, which would be the user calibration, but I have no expertise in this area :)

I’ve considered getting the R2 purely to help know whether when I taste over/under extraction, if that’s just me, or the refraction roughly agrees. It’s quite a cost though, so I’m holding off for the moment, and directed the funds to a hand-grinder for comparison/backup with my Vario+.
